Chante Black's career high not enough to keep the Devils alive
by
Mark Watson
on Mon 31 Mar 2008 11:54 AM EDT
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (AP) — Patrice Reado scored all 17 of her points in the second half and Texas A&M overcame the loss of standout Danielle Gant to beat Duke, giving the Aggies the school's first berth in the regional finals.
Takia Starks added 15 points for second-seeded Texas A&M (29-7), which extended its winning streak to 12 games and will play either top-seeded Tennessee or fifth-seeded Notre Dame on Tuesday for berth in the Final Four.
Texas A&M coach Gary Blair said before the game that the Aggies would prefer to keep the score in the 50s or 60s against a high-octane Duke team. Third-seeded Duke (25-10) helped the Aggies with that strategy, committing 19 turnovers and never managing to get into an offensive rhythm against a team that led the Big 12 Conference in scoring defense.
Chante Black, who had a career-high 26 points and season-high 13 rebounds in a second round win over Arizona State, led the Blue Devils with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

Mark Watson
on Mon 25 Feb 2008 07:31 PM EST
DURHAM, N.C. – After leading 11th-ranked Duke to two Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) victories and scoring 20 or more points in both contests over the weekend, Blue Devil junior Chante Black was named ACC Player of the Week on Monday.
The honor for Black is the first of her career and marks the first time a Duke student-athlete has earned ACC Player of the Week this season. A Blue Devil has now received at least one weekly ACC award in 15 straight years.
Black averaged 21.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 1.0 blocked shot last week for the Blue Devils. On Sunday against Virginia, the junior registered a career-high 22 points to go along with eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks. She hit 7-of-11 field goals and 8-of-9 free throws in the game. The victory for Duke clinched the No. 3 seed for the Blue Devils in the upcoming ACC Tournament.
A product of Winston-Salem, N.C., Black registered 20 points, five rebounds, four steals and one assist in 28 minutes at Virginia Tech on Friday. The 6-5 center hit 7-of-14 field goals and 6-of-8 free throws in the contest.
On the week, Black hit 56.0 percent of her field goals and 82.4 percent from the charity stripe. In addition, Black has started all 28 games this season and has totaled double-figure scoring in 24 of those 28 contests.
Boston College’s Carolyn Swords was named ACC Rookie of the Week.
Duke will next travel down Tobacco Road to face second-ranked North Carolina on Sunday, March 2 at 5:30 p.m., in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Duke defeats Cavs to lock up third place in the ACC
by
Mark Watson
on Sun 24 Feb 2008 03:47 PM EST
The Blue Devils closed out their home season by defeating Virginia 78-70 on Senior Day. The win assures the Devils of a third place seeding in the upcoming ACC Tournament. Wanisha Smith made two free throws with 5:04 remaining in the second half which enabled Duke to pull even at 61 apiece.
Duke then had three consecutive steals, taking advantage of two to go up 65-61. Two of those steals were made by freshman Jasmine Thomas and the other Careem Gay. The Blue Devils never looked back after trailing by nine earlier in the half eventually going on a back breaking 11-0 run.

Wanisha Smith hit this key lay up to give Duke a 63-61 lead and the Devils never looked back.
"I think it was defense and learning from our previous games to have to fight to figure out a way when we're down in the second half to get a lead and keep the lead. Just learning from previous games helped us a lot," said the senior Smith.
The Dukies were led by Chante Black's career high 22 points. Wanisha Smith added 16 in her last game in Cameron. She was honored along with Emily Waner at games end. Duke had a 49-5 record at home during Smiths four year stint.
It seems like just yesterday when I snapped a picture Smith, who was then a rising senior in high school. She visited Duke with Candace Parker of Tennessee during that recruiting weekend. Candace got Shelden, but we got Wanisha and she proved to be a solid player over the years.
Duke will now travel to North Carolina to close their season next Sunday. That game will be televised by Fox Sports Net at 5:50 p.m. Duke is now 10-3 in the league and 21-7 overall. Duke tied a season high with 24 free throws made on 30 attempts. he Blue Devils also forced 22 turnovers, making this the 20th time that has happened this season.

Duke Women Get Defensive - Defeat Wake Forest 71-36
by
Mark Watson
on Sun 10 Feb 2008 04:22 PM EST
Wake Forest scored their first basket at the 12:43 mark of the first half. Duke played dominant defense throughout the game holding Wake Forest to 22.8% for the game which was a season low for Duke. Granted Wake is down three point guards from the start of the season due to injuries. Still Duke smothered the Deacs with 17 steals while forcing 24 turnovers.
Abby Waner scored her 1000th Career Point today!
It's a good thing the Blue Devils defense showed up today, for Duke shot just 17.6% from the three point stripe and 40.3% overall. Duke was led by Careem Gay's 15 points, while Cheek chipped in 13 and Abby Waner 12.
There was little doubt that Duke would secure it's eighteenth win of the season and boost it's conference record to 7-2. The Blue Devils will now go on the road to face Clemson on Wednesday before a rematch with Maryland next Sunday.
Abby Waner scored her 1000th career point at the 10:24 mark of the first half. Waner now has 1004 in her career at Duke University. Today's game was labeled "Think Pink" to show support for the fight against breast cancer. Duke held Wake to their season low of 36 points -- 18 in each half. Duke has now won 31 straight game versus the Deacons and moved to 9-2 at home this season .

Duke rebounds nicley with 85-50 drubbing of the Hokies
by
Mark Watson
on Sat 02 Feb 2008 12:13 AM EST
DURHAM, N.C. (AP) -- Now that Virginia Tech's out of the way, Duke can look forward to its biggest rival. The Blue Devils (No. 11 ESPN/USA Today, No. 9 AP) used great second-half shooting to rout Virginia Tech 85-50 on Friday night. Next up: A home game against rival North Carolina on Monday. Wanisha Smith and Joy Cheek scored 14 points apiece to lead Duke, which shot a season-high 59.5 percent in the second half to put away the Hokies (13-9, 0-7 Atlantic Coast Conference). Chante Black added 11 points and Krystal Thomas contributed 10 for the Blue Devils, who got their first win since losing to No. 2 Tennessee 67-64 on Monday. All 12 Blue Devils (16-5, 5-1) scored, a first this season. Duke coach Joanne P. McCallie said the offensive firepower was because of strong efforts from every player. "Coach P hit it when she said it was a total team effort," said junior guard Abby Waner, who had seven points, five assists and no turnovers. "When you have so many different threats and so many ways to score ... it's just really tough to defend." Although the Blue Devils finished strong, their offense struggled in the first half. Duke got the majority of its points in the paint to take a 29-22 halftime lead and closed the half without scoring a basket for the last 6:08. But McCallie didn't harp on that span, and she didn't need to. Duke opened the second half with a 13-6 run as its shooters warmed up. Smith and Waner hit 3-pointers to help Duke extend its lead to 45-30 with 15:07 left. From there, the Blue Devils romped and gave their bench players plenty of playing time. For the Hokies, the loss was yet another frustrating outcome. Andrea Barbour scored 15 points and Brittany Cook had 14 to lead Virgina Tech, but turnovers and poor rebounding sunk the team's chances. Virginia Tech turned the ball over 21 times, leading to 25 Duke points. The Blue Devils outrebounded the Hokies 50-35. "In the second half, I thought we got just completely away from our game plan," Hokies coach Beth Dunkenberger said. "We didn't guard correctly. We didn't take care of the ball on offense. We had some bad turnovers which in turn led to some Duke transition opportunities, and things went worse from there." The Hokies' Shani Grey left the game with more than 14 minutes left after colliding with Waner and hurting her right knee. Dunkenberger said she didn't know much but thought it was a knee-on-knee collision. Grey has had surgery on that knee and couldn't put much weight on it. She did not return. With the Hokies dispatched, the Blue Devils can spend the next three days worrying about North Carolina, the highest-scoring team in the nation. This is McCallie's first game in the storied rivalry, and she's looking forward to it. The Tar Heels are also one of the nation's top rebounding squads, and the Blue Devils will hope to have the same rebounding success as they had Friday night against the Hokies. "It's going to be a board game without question," McCallie said. "It's a very physical, athletic game. A lot of shots are going to go up, that's for sure. It's just who is going to get those second- and third-shot opportunities." Against Virginia Tech, Duke scored 17 second-chance points.

Tennessee outlasts Duke for 67-64 win
by
Mark Watson
on Mon 28 Jan 2008 10:11 PM EST
ESPN Camera crews were in place while Rebbecca Lobo could be seen going over her pre game notes. The press room was filled to maximum and the Vol's even had their own TV crew present. In fact, several writers who normally only cover the men's games suddenly appeared. The reason for all the activity? It was 23 minutes before tip off of the Tennessee at Duke Women's game.
The Orange Nation poured into and around Cameron, some trying to score last minute tickets to the sold out event. Outside, scalpers were asking 75.00 a piece for prime tickets This would be another game in the outstanding series where Duke held a slim 5-4 edge coming into the game.
The Vols were set to avenge a four point loss to the Blue Devils in last season game. Both teams were feeling each other out early. Duke came out playing tenacious defense and controlled much of the first half, but Tennessee closed hard and they went into the locker rooms with the score deadlocked at 33 apiece. The Devils held All American Candace Parker to 6 first half points, but after the break that changed.
Parker came alive in the second half and ended the game with 17 points and 12 rebounds. But the real thorn in the Blue Devils side was freshman sharpshooter Angie Bjorklund who nailed three key three pointers on her way to 13 points. Add to that the most telling statistic of the game which is that the Vols had 22 second chance points to zero for Duke.
Despite that glaring stat, Dukes defense helprd them hold their opponent to 40% from the field. In fact, Tennessee turned the ball over 23 times which led to 29 points for Duke, yet the still managed to pull out the win. Tennessee coach Pat Summitt said, "Great teams find a way to win" when asked of the turnovers.
Duke was led by Chante Black who tallied 13 points as did superb freshman Jasmine Thomas. The game was close the whole way despite just five lead changes. The loss ended Dukes 24 game homecourt winning streak and ties the series at 5-5. The game was the ninth sell out in women's basketball history.
Abby Waner hurled up a desperation 65 foot shot which would had tied the game at the buzzer but it rimmed out. Abby moved to fourth on the all time three point shots, having made a key three to tie the game.
"I thought we did pretty well up until the end. I thought we should have come out a little bit more aggressive," said Chante Black. You could certainly point to Tennessee scoring the first seven points as a culprit, or the lack of rebounding on the Devils part. Either way, Duke seems to be getting better with the tough lessons learned and they played tough against the number two team in the country all night long.

Duke Defense Stymies the Noles in 70-38 win
by
Mark Watson
on Fri 11 Jan 2008 09:56 PM EST
Duke continued the nations longest home court winning streak by shutting down Florida State 70-38. The Blue Devils (13-3 overall, 2-0 ACC) started slow and rode the first half play of Chante Black and a spark off the bench by Brigette Mitchell to take a 36-18 lead into the half.
Black was clearly the player of the game going 9 of 11 from the field for 19 points. She added 9 rebounds, 4 blocks and 2 assists to her totals and all of that was in just 25 minutes of play. Black set the tone with her ability to alter Florida State shots. The Seminoles shot just 23.4 percent for the game and scored their lowest point total since a 36 point effort versus N.C. State in 1997.

Chante Black helps lead the Blue Devils to a 2-0 ACC record
When Seminole coach Sue Semrau took to the podium she said, "Chante Black was incredible. She was a dominant scorer and rebounder. She is a force ... one of the best in the ACC." She followed that up saying that her team was embarrassed and that missing players to suspension was no excuse for their play.
If one were to take a quick look at the score sheet, you would have wondered how Duke dominated the Noles at first glance. Wanisha Smith and Abby Waner went just 2 of 21 from the field. Add to that Duke was 1 of 12 from the three point stripe and one would have had to seen the defensive effort to understand the dominance.
Coach McCallie sang the praise of Black and alluded to her consistency, stating that the whole team would strive to be that efficient. She also made mention of Duke scoring 53 points in the paint. "We set the tone early with or defensive intensity," said McCallie.
Duke will need for Waner and Smith to find their shots in the next game, for they travel to Maryland to face a deep Terrapin team. "We are getting better each time out," said McCallie. She went on saying that Duke would carry over the lesson they had learned and that they were excited for the upcoming road challenge.
The Blue Devils won with defense on this night and they will need another good effort on that side of the ball if they are to pull off a win the tough environment that awaits them. When questioned of the paltry three point shooting, McCallie stated that the Basketball Gods were sometimes funny and that they would eventually make them. Here is to hoping that the constantly improving Blue Devils find that stroke be it help from the Basketball Gods or just plain luck.

Duke Women adjusting, prepare for Florida State Tonight
by
Mark Watson
on Fri 11 Jan 2008 09:55 AM EST
As I mentioned during the pre season, it would likely take some time for Duke to adjust to a new system under Coach McCallie. Jim Sumner goes into detail at the Duke Basketball Report.
Speaking of the Florida State game ... it tips off in Cameron tonight at 7:00 and is a key early ACC match up. If you get the chance, check them out in person or watch on the Raycom Network which is also known as FSN. If you haven't been to a women's game, you should be ashamed! Seriously, they are a lot of fun as is the team. There is a reason why attendance continues to soar and the Men's team comes in the check them out. Anyhow, here are the Official Game Notes from GoDuke.com.
The Blue Devil Nation just loves players who want to play for Duke. Or should I say, players who love Duke are cool? Well, I can remember when Senior, Wanisha Smith first visited campus and the gleam in her eyes. In fact, we have a picture we'll dig up for Senior Day. Until then, here is Rob Clough with the skinny on the Duke leader.

Duke Women Thwart Bucknell
by
Mark Watson
on Sat 22 Dec 2007 08:37 AM EST
DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - After averaging barely more than 66 points in its first 10 games, No. 14 Duke broke 90 for the second straight time Friday and beat Bucknell, 92-49. Instead of the Blue Devils' 40-for-91 shooting or 57-32 edge in rebounds, Duke first-year coach Joanne McCallie first credited the defense.
"In 16 years of coaching, I've always believed in pressing full court," said McCallie. "Being at Duke, with the quality of players we have here, it elevates it to a new level of opportunity."
Duke scored 40 points off 32 Bucknell turnovers, 20 of them steals. When McCallie wasn't applauding the defense, she was waving the Blue Devils forward to pick up the pace.
"Particularly when we're not being pressed, we want to get the ball up the court at the speed of light," she said.
All five Duke starters broke double digits Friday, with Chante Black and Joy Cheek each getting 19 points and eight rebounds. Cheek's numbers were her career high in points and a season high for boards.
"I'm feeling more confident," Cheek said. "The coaches expect our posts to score, and what player doesn't like to score?"
Abby Waner added 16 for Duke (9-3). Jasmine Thomas had 12 and Wanisha Smith 11 points. None of Duke's starters played more than 27 minutes.
"We definitely got better tonight with a variety of issues, whether it was offensive rebounds, or assists, or having five players in double figures and creating some balance of opportunities on offense," McCallie said.
Kesha Champion led Bucknell (4-7) with 21 points. She hit 7-for-11 from the field, including 3-for-4 shooting on 3-pointers.
"It was a challenge," Champion said. "That was a better press than we've seen all year. It was difficult to prepare for it."
Duke held Bucknell's Hope Foster to two points. The preseason player of the year in the Patriot League, Foster hit 1-of-5 from the field.
"She was just out-sized," Bucknell coach Kathy Fedorjaka said. "Definitely out-sized against that level of athleticism. Chante Black is not just big (6-5), but has great athleticism and is very mobile."
Out-rebounded 33-7 on the offensive boards, Bucknell gave up 27 second-chance points to Duke. Duke led 53-31 by halftime, the best first half of scoring for the Blue Devils so far this season. Waner hit three 3-pointers and had 13 points in the first half. Black had 11 at the half.
The Bison managed a single 3-point basket by Champion in the first 16:26 of the second half, while Duke used a 10-3 run to stretch its lead to 63-34. Bucknell missed its last six shots and failed to score in the game's final 6:09. Duke ended the game with an 11-0 run.
"I loved the fight of our last group in," McCallie said. "I challenged them to not allow a score."
Meanwhile, here is an update on Coach G in Texas.

Vandy got it's revenge over the Duke Women's team last evening. The loss is the second of the young season for the Blue Devils who have struggled on the offensive end. Chante Black had a breakout game, but Duke still seems to be seeking it's identity. With a tough regular season schedule ahead, expect more losses. In the end Duke should learn from the experiences and be tougher come tournament time.

Duke Women Rout UNCG in Opener
by
Mark Watson
on Mon 19 Nov 2007 01:42 PM EST
Joanne McCallie or Coach P as she is affectionately known, won here first regular season game in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke thrashed the youthful UNCG Spartans 84-39 in the home opener. Duke won it's 75th straight game against a non conference opponent in the process.
"It was a great atmosphere and I loved the crowd," said Coach McCallie when asked her reaction to her first regular season win at home. She went on to say it felt natural and one thing certainly remained the same as from the Coach G era, that being a win.
Picture gallery here -slidehow mode works best.
The team waves goodbye to 500 plus fans
For awhile it looked as Duke was going to struggle. In fact, they had a slender lead until a UNCG timeout. The score was 17-8 at that time, but when the Devils returned to the floor they never looked back outscoring their opponent 27-8 going into halftime.
Duke woke up late in the half behind two very nice steals and buckets from Brittney Mitch who started the game there. Depth was developed at the position or the guard spots in general with freshman Jasmine Thomas and Emily Waner seeing action.
The guards were forced into more action fore Duke was missing arguably it's top two players in Abby Waner and Wanisha Smith. Waner has a high ankle sprain and is day to day as is Smith, but McCallie mentioned Smith might return for the next game versus Purdue in her press conference.

Abby Waner and the Blue Devil players signed autographs for the fans after the game
Duke's swarming defense set a school record of 28 steals in the game. Duke forced the Spartans into 38 turnovers and just one more point at 39. Krystal Thomas had her way in the paint tallying 20 points and 10 rebounds.
McCallie stated that the Devils would continue to get the ball to their talented trio of Black, Thomas and Gay who all attended the press conference. Each player's comments reflected on a tight knit group whose theme of blue collar work this season was obvious.
The Blue Devil Nation will follow the Duke Women's team all season long and I encourage fans to check out the team. Despite the band returning from South Bend, the atmosphere was quite fun for those who attended. There was a lot of fun stuff going on for the kids outside and well, it's a lot of bang for the buck. I highly suggest that you make your own assessment by attending what will be a great home schedule, featuring Rutgers, Tennessee, Maryland and UNC among others. The official crowd was 5,534. The team has been highly accessible. They signed autographs for the fans after the game.
