Josh McRoberts scored 11 of his 15 points in the second half and grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds as No. 5 Duke recovered from a sluggish start to beat San Jose State 70-51 on Sunday. DeMarcus Nelson - Continue
I expected Duke to be sluggish and they were. Still, it is good to be 12-1 and ranked number five in the Nation with such a young team.

A first glance, one would think Duke would walk all over San Jose State, but while I certainly see a win, I think there it is possible that a little Holiday blues carrys into the game. The key players Duke needs to shut down are Carlton Spencer, Jamon Hill, Barbary and Piecre who are all double figure scorers. Duke should find a way to carry over the success from the Gonzaga game. Lance Thomas is out for this game, but Duke wins 80-53. Blue Devils beam into what Coach K is saying.

Oswego will take on South Medord tonight in a rematch from last years Oregon State Title game. Last season UCLA commitment Kevin Love and Duke bound Kyle Singler battled it out, with Loves team coming out on top after a missed shot at the buzzer. Those from Medford wonder if Kyle had taken the shot, would the result have been different. The winner of that game will take on Oak Hill Academy. Yes, I am assuming they win. The game will also be televised on the ESPN sports network. There is more news in the premium newsletter, including the fact that Duke is now interested in big time point guard, Larry Drew. The Blue Devil Nation interviewed Larry on Wednesday and had information long before the major networks caught wind of the development. You can find out who is really on the recruiting radar and facts about the situation from someone who has been on press row. When the Blue Devil Nation asked Larry Drew which three words best describes his game, he said unselfish, poised and a leader.
Taft PG Larry Drew has a long list of schools, including North Carolina, but Duke is interested in the California prospect. There is a reason we interviewed him two days ago. Get his list of schools and accurate information on this new prospect and read about his performance at the Glaxo event in the BDN Premium Newsletter. So for coverage on Samardo Samuels and Larry Drew and instant results from the big game in Oregon or information on a recent talk with a parent of Patrick Patterson or things like the upcoming meeting on the state of football, or an inside look at what is in store for facilities, give the newsletter a try. We have had a lot to talk about of late and it is getting busier so don't miss out. If you are a Duke aficionado, you will love it.
Whats the deal on Samardo Samuels? The Blue Devil Nation Premium Newsletter has the very latest on his recruitment -- now!

Holiday Tournaments Feature Samueals, Smith and perhaps Love-Singler II
by Mark Watson on Wed 27 Dec 2006 12:50 PM EST
Lake Oswego's Kevin Love who committed to UCLA and South Medford's Kyle Singler who did the same with Duke, join the nation's top-ranked high school basketball team, Oak Hill Academy to play in the Les Schwab Invitational this week. Singler dunks at the Peach Jam. Kevin Love flirted with UNC before choosing the Bruins. His team nipped Singler's for the Oregon State Finals last season. Singler will join Taylor King, Nolan Smith and possibly Patrick Patterson in what could possibly be the Nations top class.
Love waits to check into the game at the TOC. The four-day, 16-team tournament begins Wednesday at Liberty High School in Hillsboro. Eleven senior players in the field have committed to play at Division I programs next season and that number is likely to grow. A potential state championship rematch between Lake Oswego and South Medford is possible in the semifinals, at 7 p.m. Friday, but only if Love and Singler steer their teams past the first two rounds. Oak Hill Academy, ranked No. 1 in the nation by USA Today, is making its fourth appearance at the tournament, and has three players committed to major programs: Nolan Smith to Duke, Alex Legion to Michigan and Julian Vaughn to Florida State. The powerhouse program from Mouth of Wilson, Va., has never lost a game at the Les Schwab Invitational, winning titles in 1997, 2001 and 2004.
Nolan Smith is hoping to impress the Cameron crowd on January the 31st, but will compete in Oregon this week. Taylor King did very well in the Palms Classic - The All Tournament Team -

No rest for two of the best --Lake Oswego's Kevin Love and South Medford's Kyle Singler have already committed to UCLA and Duke, respectively, but each is working harder than ever to improve -- and bring his team a state high school basketball title.
Here is a great read that gives one an idea of the rivalry between Kevin Love and Kyle Singler.

In a much anticipated showdown of a Duke commitment Taylor King, and a Duke prospect, Greg Monroe, King came out the winner, but not before a furious comeback effort. Mater Dei High School built a 15 point halftime led behind the red hot shooting of Duke bound Taylor King, who had 20 points on 8 of 12 shooting in the first half. A Greg Monroe block the of a Taylor King fade away sparked a 7 point run for Helen Cox of Lousiana. Monroe in action! Monroe is the top prospect in his class.

Well, Duke traveled to New York and got defensive against Gonzaga. Needless to say, this was a huge win. More to come - Paulus is mending nicely! The sophomore PG led Duke in scoring. Taylor King netted 27 points to lead powerful Mater Dei to the Championship game of the Palms tournament in Florida. He had four three pointers and three dunks and the tournament favorite advanced.
The sharpshooter let the Florida crowds know that he had a great three point shot. Greg Monroe did one of his first interviews with the Blue Devil Nation at the Peach Jam Festival and claimed then, that he puts his team first. Greg scored 16 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and had 7 blocked shots as his team advanced to the title game. "He had three consecutive blocks in one series of plays," said a source. The local beat writer went on, "Greg has been the most watched player in the Palms classic, but he defers to his teammates too much." "If they are to beat Mater Dei, his coach will have to make sure he gets more touches." Greg can go with either hand on the court and is a wiry, talented, near 4.0 student. His versatility was quite evident when I saw him play. He is a rare breed that has developed skills both inside and out at a very early age. He is soft spoken and quite simply very polite, possibly due to his upbringing where his Mom keeps him in check. For the very latest on recruiting, give the gift of information for Christmas, by joining the Blue Devil Nation Premium Newsletter. You can do so under the menu to your left. Do not miss upcoming interviews with Patrick Patterson and Drew Gordon and updates on who Duke is really looking at to help them in the future. Madison Square Garden has been the locale for many heavyweight fights, and tonight, two basketball powers, Duke and Gonzaga lock gloves in a game that promises the shed many answers for the successful programs. Duke struggled with Kent State, perhaps due to exams or their lack of communication on defense, but mainly due to their susceptibility with teams that have a good back court or three guards in the starting five. Coach K faces a tough challenge in preparing his team for it's second game in three days, against a Gonzaga team that handled UNC in Madison Square Garden. While Greg Paulus played his best game of the season versus the Golden Flashes, it'll take an even greater effort by him and fellow back court mate Jon Scheyer to neutralize the potent Zag attack. The Zags are led by Derek Raivio, a tough as nails senior guard that averages 20 ppg. Then there is freshman Matt Bouldin and Jeremy Parvo, a Chicago native like Scheyer. Even if Duke finds a way to slow down the talented three, the Zags front court poses major threats, namely Josh Heyvett, who played the UNC front line like a Tiger in their win. Some may say, hey, the Zags are 9-3, but they have played as tough a slate as they come. They have wins over #2 UNC, a thrashing of top ten team Washington and they handled ranked Texas easily. Freshman Jon Scheyer will play against another former Chicago area HS star in Parvo. Now lets look at the Gonzaga losses to underrated Washington State, giant killer and top ten team, Butler and Georgia. The Bulldogs loss was shocking, but it was on the road and the Dogs are 8-1. For that matter the combined records of the three teams they lost to are 29-3. So what we have here is a solid team that is battle tested and much better than its #22 ranking. Another interesting fact is that the Zags haven't lost back to back games since the 2002 season and to prove they are no longer flying under the radar, one only has to look at their eight straight NCAA appearances. Lets take it a step further with another mind blowing stat. Gonzaga is 8-1 all time versus the mighty ACC.
Henderson needs to let the game come to him. Duke will have to find some production from the freshman to compete. Gerald Henderson, Lance Thomas and Brian Zoubek were all no shows in the last outing and you can throw Marty Pocius in there too. At least one of the aforementioned needs to lift thier game a notch in this contest. McRoberts is sure to be tested in this game and needs to finish with authority near the basket. DeMarcus Nelson will have to be on his game, as he will likely draw Raivio defensively. IOW, our guys will have to play together and this game will surely test their resolve. Breakdown - I am hoping the NYC area crowd will keep the Blue Devils pumped up, because in my opinion, Gonzaga is the best team we've played this season and that includes Marquette. It will take a team effort, as the Zags can go to their bench, but if our leaders, Captains McRoberts, Paulus and Nelson have a big game, I feel we will slip by. The key will be shuting down Raivio and hitting the boards hard against a great rebounding club. The game should live up to its billing. The Pick is - Duke 68 Gonzaga 67

There are several books out on the market, but a Duke Basketball fan is sure to want one of these books in their Christmas stocking. DECEMBER 28---In a stunning rebuke to the North Carolina district attorney handling the Duke University rape case, the state bar today filed an ethics complaint against the prosecutor, claiming that he has made numerous press statements that were "prejudicial to the administration of justice" and also "engaged in conduct involving dishonesty, fraud, deceit, or misrepresentation." The North Carolina State Bar's complaint, a copy of which you'll find below, is filled with dozens of comments D.A. Mike Nifong (pictured at right) made following the alleged March rape of a stripper who had performed at a party attended by members of Duke's lacrosse team.
