Duke women drop one to Vanderbilt 68-55

Vandy got it's revenge over the Duke Women's team last evening. The loss is the second of the young season for the Blue Devils who have struggled on the offensive end. Chante Black had a breakout game, but Duke still seems to be seeking it's identity. With a tough regular season schedule ahead, expect more losses. In the end Duke should learn from the experiences and be tougher come tournament time.

Duke 82 Wisconsin 58

DURHAM, N.C. -- Greg Paulus scored a season-high 18 points to lead five Blue Devils in double figures as seventh-ranked Duke defeated 20th-ranked Wisconsin, 82-58, as part of the annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Tuesday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils move to 7-0 -- pushing their winning streak in non-conference home games to an NCAA-best 55 games -- while the Badgers fall to 5-1. Tuesday's tilt marked the first meeting on the hardwood between the two schools. With the win, Duke improves to a perfect 9-0 in Big Ten/ACC Challenge action. The Blue Devils also earned Challenge victories over Illinois (72-69 in 1999 & 78-77 in 2000), Iowa (80-62 in 2001), Ohio State (91-76 in 2002), Michigan State (72-50 in 2003 & 81-74 in 2004) and Indiana (75-67 in 2005 & 54-51 in 2006). Duke took control early, using a 15-5 run to claim a 25-14 lead at the 11:32 mark when Paulus buried his second consecutive three-point bucket. Paulus and Taylor King combined to hit seven three-pointers in 10 attempts and score 25 points as the Blue Devils built a 48-25 halftime advantage. Wisconsin got no closer than 18 points in the second half. Paulus connected on six-of-13 field goal attempts including a four-of-seven performance from three-point range. King finished with 15 points while fellow rookie Kyle Singler added 13. Gerald Henderson and Jon Scheyer chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively, while Scheyer pulled down a career-high and game-best nine rebounds. DeMarcus Nelson added nine points, seven rebounds, seven assists, three seasons and two blocked shots. Trevon Hughes and Jon Leuer scored 12 points each to pace the Badgers. Prior to the contest, Duke dedicated its media room in Cameron Indoor Stadium as the Bill Brill Media Room. Brill, a long-time sports writer and editor, is a 1952 Duke graduate and member of the school's Sports Hall of Fame. Duke travels to Charlotte to face Davidson on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 12 noon and the game will be televised live on ESPNU. Duke's next home affair is against Michigan on Saturday, December 8 (1:30 p.m./CBS).

Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski
On playing Wisconsin in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge:This was a really good game for us. Bo is a great friend and their program can match up with anybody as far as class, wins, preparation, their fans and their school. To play against him and the Wisconsin Badgers is a real honor for us, and we approached it that way. We respect the heck out of them, and I think the fact of us playing in Maui against some of the teams we did really prepared us for this level of game. Playing at home obviously helped too. We beat a really good team that is going to get better and better. They’ve got good kids.
On his impressions of Duke’s performance:I’m proud of our guys because this is our fifth game in nine days and that includes a pretty big West Coast trip. We put them through this type of schedule to see if we could improve and we have. I thought our captain was terrific tonight. DeMarcus (Nelson) defensively was great, as was his passing. He had seven assists and I think five of them ended up for threes. When we got a double-digit lead, he hit Greg (Paulus) twice on very unselfish plays and then he hit Kyle (Singler). In the second half we were struggling for some points and he hit Taylor (King) in the corner. I thought just holding our own rebounding was huge against them too. I’m proud of our guys, but now we need to get a day off. We’ll take a day off tomorrow before playing Davidson, because it’s been a long stretch for our guys.
On the strategy of stopping Wisconsin’s offense:We made them play full court, and nobody has made them do that this year. That was a big advantage for us, not that we caused a lot of turnovers, but it just pushed their offense out a little bit more. Hughes is really good. He’s a strong guard and (Wisconsin) is going to be very good. It ended it up being our kind of game tonight, but we’re not that much better than them, if we are better than them. They’re real good, but we had the advantage of playing a little bit more before coming in here.
On Duke’s ability to shoot from beyond the arc:The three should be a huge weapon for us. We practice it and play it. (Wisconsin) plays more of a top-of-the-key defense, so we thought if we could set our screens a little better, we would get some open looks, and we got a couple of those. Just by rebounding, we got some broken plays. Those two for Greg were broken plays where DeMarcus just made a play. It’s not something a coach calls. I told our guys this afternoon at our shoot-around that tonight would be a player’s game. They needed to be instinctive and there wouldn’t be much strategy from the bench.
On the identity of his team this season:We’re trying to personalize a system for this team. We’ve tried to do that every year; it’s just that this team has more weapons. We’re deeper and more experienced than last year. Last year, my kids played great. They played 22 games hurt and young and went to the NCAA Tournament. That experience of doing that and being tough has translated into more maturity along with the three freshmen. That, along with Paulus being healthy. He hasn’t missed a day of practice this year after playing with a bad foot all of last year. I love my guys, and this is a really good group.
Junior Greg Paulus
“We needed to be emotional out there. The crowd was great today, and we really fed off their energy. The fact that we got off to a good start really helped us out.”
“We tried to push it. We’re a little bit smaller than they are, so we tried to use that quickness to our advantage. But they’re so good at what they do that we just tried to make things difficult for them because of their size and their strength inside. I didn’t see them [getting frustrated]. I was trying not to think like that because with such a great team that they have and so many guys that can do so many things for them offensively and defensively, the minute you start thinking like that is the minute they start taking advantage of it.”
“I know I’m very confident, but also having teammates pass you the ball to shoot it or when Coach [Mike Krzyzewski is saying, ‘If you’ve got it, let it go,’ just hearing that from everybody, from staff to teammates, gives you more confidence.”
On the upcoming matchup with Davidson:“We’ve played them the last couple of years. They had a great year last year and they’re having another great year this year. They’ve got some guys who can score and they’re very talented. We’re going to need to be ready to go.”
Sophomore Jon Scheyer
On Duke’s rebounding:“That was a big key for us because we really wanted to get out and run, so the only way we could do that was by making stops and getting rebounds. The guards especially had to get in there because they’re such a big team inside. We did a good job of that tonight.
On defending Wisconsin’s Trevon Hughes:“For the most part early we let him get too many open looks. But our gameplan was to make it hard for him the whole time and make him work for everything, because he’s been doing really well early in the season. We did a pretty good job. He’s a tough player to control.” On freshman Taylor King’s shooting ability:“It started this summer, when he would shoot shots from halfcourt. He can really shoot the ball so well. Some of the shots you think, ‘Oh wow, that’s a bad shot,’ but he can make a lot of those tough shots. Today, he had one from the corner and I was really pumped when he made that. He can really shoot it. I’m used to it now, but it still surprises me sometimes.”
Freshman Taylor King
“The last two games I felt like I’ve been shooting the ball pretty well. Again, I think I’ve been getting into a flow of the game. The first few games of the season besides the [North Carolina] Central game, I think I went out there and I didn’t throw myself in the game. I was thinking too much about what I’m going to on defense and on offense. But so far the last couple of games, I’ve been really throwing myself out there, playing defense, getting everybody involved, and my teammates have definitely helped me out by getting me wide open shots.”
“I’m just trying to get myself open. I think definitely the dribble drive and kick has been wide open, especially this game. And because of that we got wide open shots and we’ve been shooting the ball pretty well from three. That’s what’s going to happen because we have a very good driving team and if everyone plays us for the drive, we’ll get wide open kicks.”

Taylor King Lights It Up
“Today I just felt like I needed to contribute as much as possible to the team, in as many minutes as I get. I knew we were going to come in and play good defense, and I thought we did that. I thought we struggled a little bit offensively, dribble-driving and penetrating. We couldn’t really do that much against this team because they were a great defensive team. We just needed to drive and kick and I was open on the wings most of the team and fortunately I shot the ball well.” Taylor King
| 11/25/2007 - Duke Sports Information |
DURHAM, N.C. -- Taylor King scored a game-high 27 points as the 13th-ranked Blue Devils defeated Eastern Kentucky, 78-43, on Sunday afternoon at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils improve to 6-0 on the year while the Colonels fall to 2-3. King's scoring output marks the ninth-highest single-game performance by a Duke rookie in school history while establishing a new school standard for reserves. The previous mark for scoring by a player off the bench was 25 points, held by five players including Luol Deng against North Carolina on March 6, 2004. Duke never trailed in the contest, snapping a 2-2 tie with a layup by Kyle Singler just over two minutes into the first half. Singler's bucket started a 16-3 run that gave the Blue Devils an 18-5 advantage on King's three-pointer with 9:15 on the clock. Duke led by a 34-12 count at intermission as Eastern Kentucky made just four-of-17 field goal attempts and committed 18 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes. The Blue Devils led by as many as 38 points in the second half. King connected on 9-of-14 field goals including 6-of-11 three-pointers. The six triples match the Duke single-game record for rookies also held by Trajan Langdon and J.J. Redick. DeMarcus Nelson and Gerald Henderson added 12 and 10 points, each. Eastern Kentucky was led by Adam Leonard's 12 points.
Freshman Taylor King
On his performance today:“Today I just felt like I needed to contribute as much as possible to the team, in as many minutes as I get. I knew we were going to come in and play good defense, and I thought we did that. I thought we struggled a little bit offensively, dribble-driving and penetrating. We couldn’t really do that much against this team because they were a great defensive team. We just needed to drive and kick and I was open on the wings most of the team and fortunately I shot the ball well.”
“I thought that I got good open shots and felt like I played good defense. I thought my defense was pretty good and as a result my offense followed.”
On being in the zone:“It was fun. My teammates got me open and that really helped. They definitely drove and kicked, and I was open for shots and knocked them down.”
On how a performance like his today will help his confidence:“It can raise you up big-time. You need confidence to help you play better and I thought I did that. Especially coming off only playing two or three minutes in Maui, I thought I kept a good attitude and my teammates helped me out big-time. My coaches said, ‘Just be ready to play,’ and that’s what I did.”

Duke loses heartbreaker to UNC
by
Mark Watson
on Sat 24 Nov 2007 09:03 PM EST
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Duke football team closed out the 2007 season with a 20-14 overtime loss to rival North Carolina on Saturday afternoon as 52,000 fans looked on at Kenan Memorial Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C.
The Blue Devils finish the year at 1-11 overall and 0-8 in ACC play. The Tar Heels improve to 4-8 overall and 3-5 in the league.
North Carolina took the opening kickoff and drove 55 yards on six plays to claim a 7-0 lead when T.J. Yates threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Tate.
The Blue Devils countered with a scoring drive of their own as quarterbacks Thaddeus Lewis and Zack Asack combined to engineer a 12 play, 67-yard march that clipped 6:13 off the clock. Lewis hooked up with Jomar Wright for a 25-yard scoring toss to cap the drive with 6:33 remaining in the first period.
The Tar Heels had a scoring opportunity late in the opening quarter, but Patrick Egboh sacked Yates on third down and nine from the Duke 30 yard line to push North Carolina out of field goal range. The sack marked the first of Egboh’s career.
In the second quarter, North Carolina had two scoring chances thwarted by turnovers. Jabari Marshall registered the first interception of his career with a pickoff in the end zone and, on the Tar Heels’ next possession, Catron Gainey followed with his first interception deep in Duke territory.
On their first possession of the second half, Duke drove inside the Tar Heel 20 yard line, but missed a 36-yard field goal attempt.
Wright’s second touchdown reception of the day pushed Duke ahead by a 14-7 count. Lewis found Wright open in the end zone from four yards out to cap a 15 play, 88-yard drive that took 7:16 off the clock. The scoring march was keyed by two third down catches by Austin Kelly.
North Carolina knotted the score at 14-14 when Greg Little rushed around the left end for a seven-yard touchdown with 7:09 remaining in the game. The nine play, 72-yard drive took 4:06 off the clock.
Duke got the ball back with 1:25 remaining and marched 58 yards to set up the potential game-winning field goal with one second left on the clock. However, freshman Nick Maggio missed on a 40-yard attempt, forcing overtime.
In the extra session, the Blue Devils netted just two yards before Joe Surgan missed a 42-yard field goal attempt. North Carolina then scored on its first play when Little found the end zone on a 25-yard carry, giving the Tar Heels a 20-14 win.
Lewis completed 18-of-27 passes for 219 yards and two touchdowns on the day while Wright hauled in eight throws for 91 yards. Clifford Harris rushed for a team-best 44 yards on six carries.
Little paced the Tar Heel offense with 154 yards on the ground. Yates completed 11-of-24 pass attempts for 75 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.
With the win, North Carolina picks up two points in the Carlyle Cup competition and leads the current standings, 8-2. The Carlyle Cup is a 23-sport competition between the two schools

Duke at UNC
by
Mark Watson
on Fri 23 Nov 2007 06:40 PM EST
There was a time when the Duke-UNC football game was a hot topic of discussion in the Triangle, especially on the eve of the game. Those days are long gone, thanks to the Blue Devil's inability to keep up their end of the bargain in rivalry. Despite the schools being just eight miles apart, you can surely get an easy ticket if you happen upon Kenan Stadium around 3:00 tomorrow afternoon.
When Ted Roof took over the Blue Devils as the interim coach, he bested UNC 30-22 which prompted some Duke fans and the AD to wonder if he might just be the man for the job. I mean, he snapped a 13 game losing streak to the Heels. You could certainly have made a point that he was the right man at the time, but in hindsight it certainly looks as if emotion played a big role in the late season turnaround which saw the mid season firing of Carl Franks.
Duke decided to give Roof a contract, despite his never having been a head coach ala Franks. He then lost three straight games to UNC and his record since that time is simply too depressing to print.
Roof finds himself in the dubious position of having the worst all time record at Duke with a loss to the Tar Heels who come into this weekends game a 15.5 favorite. In the weekly press conference, it was hard to find someone who thought Roof should be given another year. In fact, there was more talk of who Duke's next coach might be and if we'd be having the same conversation four years later.
There is reason to believe that Duke will finally support football. Rumors of meetings addressing the situation are actually a fact. I have personally seen the outline and or proposals. Still, talk is just that and fans want wins or a visible commitment.
On the other side, UNC has been anything but world beaters of late. Butch Davis has found just three wins this season, but his teams have been much more competitive. In my pre season preview I stated that the Heels would likely write off Davis's first year and redshirt a solid freshman class and would win four games playing for the future. Well, that's exactly what has and or will likely happen.
Still, you can see a system in place and the football fortunes in Chapel Hill seem destined to get better. UNC made a commitment just this week to returning to winning ways in football by extending their coaches contract. That clearly shows they want to compete. In fact, their narrow loss to NC State was the type of entertaining game Triangle fans haven't seen in a while.
Whether Duke decides to join in the resurgence and have some fun remains to be seen. To do so, they will need to hire someone with head coaching experience and follow up on long overdue promise to renovate Wallace Wade Stadium as a starting point. I mean, it wasn't that long ago when the series with UNC was deadlocked and now it stands at 36-53-4 and it's not like UNC has been bowling year in and year out since that time.
Yep! Once upon a time the locals would be woofing it up, but there is more interest in the coaching situation than the players on the field. UNC fans are resting easy after locking up Butch Davis while Duke fans are thinking here we go again. Who knows? Perhaps, Duke will make a good move and this match up can once again be called a rivalry.

The Game - Duke will look to close out a disappointing season on a high note. I don't feel as if playing one for the coach will be enough to out-slug the Tar Heels. UNC should be able to exploit the Duke secondary and they are surely licking their chops to get hold of a defense that gives up a whopping 440 yards per game. While Duke has found ways to play UNC tough, they always seem to shoot themselves in the foot. UNC has been playing teams close down the stretch, while Duke has been steadily going backwards after seemingly improving earlier in the year.
