The late Red Auerbach, voted the greatest coach in NBA history, was on the Duke basketball coaching staff during the fall semester of 1949 and was considered a potential successor to then-head coach Gerry Gerard, who had been diagnosed with cancer. But Auerbach left Duke for a pro job before ever coaching in a game for the Blue Devils. Chuck Daly (1964-69) and Hubie Brown (1969-72) were both Duke assistant coaches who did coach in games at Duke. This trivia was provided from the new Encyclopedia of Duke Basketball by John Roth. Duke hopes to get back on track after a tough loss to UVA where they failed to close the deal. The Blue Devils can tie Virginia Tech in the conference standings with the win, or tie Florida State with a loss. In Al Thorton, the Noles have something that Duke does not, that being a senior. Five of the top eight scorers on their roster are guards and three of Dukes losses have been to guard heavy teams. So, guard play is important today as Scheyer and Paulus will be seeking to rebound from their shakey performance at UVA. Duke must finish down low too, taking advantage of the fact that FSU has two players up front that get major minutes. Expect Duke to bounce back, especially with JJ's jersey going to the rafters.
