View Article  Patterson, general recruiting update

This is a sample of  what you will find in the Blue Devil Nation Premium Newsletter.  With Patterson's pending decision, I decided to give the entire Blue Devil Nation a peek at today's latest update.  You will find out much more  by joining the newsletter.  Keep in mind that there have been updates on Patterson, Monroe and many others which awaits you.  You can catch up quickly with our archived offerings, so if you want extended coverage, give the BDN Newsletter a try!

Weekend tournaments - Duke evaluated several players with Collins in Texas for the Next Level Ballers, while Coach K and Wojo went to the Las Vegas Spring Showcase.  They watched as Drew Gordon had what many considered and average performance. Add Daniel Orton to the list of players who will be analyzed.  I will keep an eye on Daniel and many other kids as the summer rolls in.  Coach K and Wojo likely took a look at Elliot Williams and Reeves Nelson too.  There is no way of picking their brain on what they thought, but my feeling is that every player I have mentioned in the past week is still being evaluated, despite some having a sub par game here and there.  This was the last weekend that the coaches could attend events for awhile,  which means we are entering what is termed as a dead period.  Leslie McDonald (2009) bounced back from one miserable game with a 21 point effort, despite his teams loss.  The athletic wing is firmly embedded on the list of prospects, IMO. I will have further reports up soon, recapping how Greg Monroe finished out the weekend.

Patrick Patterson - What can I say that I haven't already?  If you peruse other sites, you will see many smoke and mirror tactics using quotes from the past or those of others to make you think they have obtained breaking news.  Blue Devil Nation Premium members know that I have stayed on top of this situation and well ahead of the curve, providing trust worthy information while remaining objective.  Quite simply, I report the facts and do not lead nor have an agenda when questioning prospects.  But that doesn't mean I can't put my Blue Devil glasses on when I share what I have gathered or specualte a bit on the day of the visit.  Still, make your own judgment as I share some thoughts.

The Patterson's are excited about tonight's pending visit ... they have been.  Coach K, Johnny Dawkins and Chris Collins will be in-home this evening, having rescheduled the visit due to unforeseen situations.

This was the first picture I took of Duke prospect Patrick Patterson during the NBA Top 100 Camp that was held in Richmond, Virginia.  I have followed him intently since that time having seen him play in 17 games in person.  Patterson will soon be making one of the most important life decisions to date.  The Duke staff is in-home with his family tonight. If you wonder how passionate Duke fans are, check out the on going thread at the Duke Basketball Report on Patterson.  It is at 30,000 hits and climbing!

Despite the fact that Duke is Duke, there is plenty left to tell.  I feel they will have an outstanding presentation which could very well surprise the Patterson's, who might think they have seen it all.

I certainly don't expect Patrick to make a decision this evening, but I do expect one in the next week or so.  I am certain the Patterson's will have a clear idea of what they want to do in the days to come.

A quick trip around message boards show that some think they have been seeking media attention.  The truth is often found somewhere in the middle, yet when the dust clears, all that they really want is what's best for their son.

Yes, they have enjoyed the process, but had they not, Patrick could have made an uninformed pick without knowing the changes that have occurred and those that may still come.

While many fans from all schools have become impatient with the process, the Patterson's have maintained all along that the decision would go to until, well, right now or mid April.  What some fans don't seem to get is that they have likely been evasive in giving the real picture to the media of late, because they have been straight from the start, yet the questions ... the same questions continue to be asked and the ones asking them spin them to their benefit for the sake of a few extra hits or to appease the fanbase they write for.

Some sites have been so arrogant, that they have lived the recruitment in their minds eye and not in reality.  Unless they are a fly on the wall in the Patterson's household, they have no idea of what is going on, yet many maintain that Florida is the clear favorite.

This isn't limited to just fan media, but national media too.  Everywhere you turn there is a new take on Patrick because he decided he wanted his eggs scrambled instead of over easy.

I have been guilty of assessing the situation like a volatile stock, but you know what?  I am reading too many of the crazy spins, so much so that I get dizzy too.

Having covered this recruiting battle extensively since the NBA Top 100 Camp in Richmond, here are today's thoughts.

While I think the Gators are a strong player in this, I have to wonder if the location may prove to be farther than they want to go as a family.  As I look at the teams left, there is one thing that stands out to me.  Virginia, Wake Forest, Kentucky and Duke are all close to home.  If I take that further, I'd be spinning, but admittedly, this is hard for me to ignore.

Patterson slams one down for Huntington High.  Patrick is physically mature and loves getting down and dirty in the post.

Then there is the situation with Coach Donovan and his contract.  While I am sure the Patterson's have asked the key questions, there has yet to be a public announcement of anything like an extension.  Then there is the Heat factor.  It is no secret that the Miami franchise has wooed Donovan and now they have been swept by the Bulls, which makes it more interesting.  How long will Donovan sign for and will there be a buyout clause?  Add this to the growing list of questions.

Kentucky is just down the road, but the changes in staff and the way the school handled the situation might come into play.  While the Patterson's have lauded Coach G as many are calling him for his straight forward approach.  It remains to be seen how this will balance out in the increasingly large pool of information they have gathered during the process.

In the Wildcats favor is the fact that the Patterson's familiar with them.  In fact, many in Huntington, West Virginia root for them and they can certainly lay claim to being a basketball school.  Still, if this is the choice, Patrick would be going to a school which is retooling under the immense pressure of fat Cats and some, and I did say some, overzealous fans.

If this becomes his destination of choice, it would be hard to think they weren't the favorite all along and that his heart or that of the family may want to remain in Huntington.

Then there is UVA and Wake who most consider an afterthought.  While some may think that Patrick is keeping them in out of respect for recruiting him early, who is to say for sure?  Still, these teams have more holes to fill in the big picture to compete at the highest level than do the other teams on his list, but maybe, just maybe that is not important for Patrick.

If you have been around the BDN since last July, you know that by looking back at the fist interviews I had with Patrick, they are eerily similar to the ones today, save the coaching changes.  In fact, it was their fear of the changes that prolonged this process and that may prove to be advantageous for Duke.

Duke has stayed the course and has never wavered.  There consistent approach and continued desire to get to know the family is straight forward.

Coach K has made no secret that Patterson is their choice to man a position that has been so successful at Duke.  Despite being pulled by his responsibilities with Team USA, he has made certain that Patrick knows his sincerity by showing up at many events to watch his progress.  What some of  our own fans need to see is that Coach K wants to coach and mentor Patrick and that he sees his potential and wants him to reach it.

In the end, as I have maintained all along, Duke will be tough to ignore.  They offer the full package and there is no way that the staff will fracture itself to the point where you will wonder about it's future continuity.

Regardless of how clear it may seem to myself and some Duke fans, this is Patrick's decision.  As you read in my latest interview a couple of days ago, the family has helped him to gather all the information possible, yet in the end they have made it clear that this is their sons choice.

That said, Patrick must balance out thoughts of happiness along with his gut of where he will grow the most as a player.  He will likely look long and hard at the big picture as well as the short term one in hopes of having the confidence to jump aboard a ship.

He will certainly look at where those Florida, Kentucky, Wake, UVA and Duke ships are sailing and try to envision himself down the road.

Duke fans think that the ideal situation is in Durham, North Carolina.  They think Coach K has polished many players with similar skill sets, so that they might flourish in the NBA.  They think Patterson would be happy playing every single game on nationwide TV, on a team that is always the center of media attention.  They think that Patterson would want to play for the man selected to coach Team USA and the likes of LeBron James and Kobe Bryant.

As a Duke fan, I could add to that list, but no matter how attractive the situation might seem, the bottom line is that the Patterson's have to see it that way too and it is admittedly harder being a fan to see what they might think are perceived pitfalls.

Tonight's visit will certainly have a lot of impact.  Until then, a little more patience is required.  Maybe, just maybe, Blue Devil fans will all be welcoming him to the Duke family in short time.

Regardless of his choice, Duke basketball is Duke basketball and the future is bright and with a little luck, Patrick Patterson may just want to be in that light.

The Chicago Bulls went up on the Miami Heat 3-0 behind former Dukies Luol Deng and Chris Duhon.  For those of you who make a big deal out of seven man rotations, check out the box score.  There is a bit more significance possibly involved here too.  I haven't seen where Billy Donovan has signed an extension with Florida and the rumors have been thick that he might be interested in the Maimi job.  This could have an effect on Patrick Patterson and should Donovan go, one would think Duke, Kentucky and Virginia would benefit.  Donovan's has made no secret of his interest in the NBA.

Deng score 24 points, grabbed 11 boards to go along with 3 assists and a block.  He is part of Duke NBA alumni which makes more greenbacks than any other school.

The coaching staff is on the recruiting trail this weekend.  Find out where they will be and what players they are likely looking at in the latest update in the Blue Devil Nation Premium Newsletter.  You will also find the very latest on Patrick Patterson with the most recent thoughts on the internet from his camp.  My readers will tell you that the information is second to none, especially on his recruiting process.  You can catch up with all the past Patterson interviews and updates, as well as my chats with incoming players Taylor King and Nolan Smith and Kyle Singler in the archives. If that is not enough, go back and read past interviews with Greg Monroe and compare it to the latest one.  Get perspective from a long time Duke fan who follows the program closely.  The site is updated as often as possible, keeping you in the know.  Many have read a very good article on Patrick Patterson on the SI site.  You will clearly see that the majority of that information was already known to members of this site.  In fact, there is a bit more.  Again, read the latest on this tense battle, with contact having been made just today.  If you have been thinking about the upgrade, this is the perfect time to give it a try for the AAU season is in full swing and I will be covering some events extensively.  I do not lean on a network, I get out there and see the players with my own eyes.  So, if you want more, just go to one of the three paypal links to the left or under the menu.  I have been asked why I do not offer monthly rates. It's simple you could learn more here in a month than you can at most places in three.   Now, admitedly, this statement pertains to basketball, but I love football too.  That said, there are three, six and twelve month memberships available, with one year being the best rate.  There is a reason why content has been quoted in the Sports Journal (Poop Sheet), come in and see why.  The Blue Devil Nation is dedicated to bring you one of a kind coverage on all things pertaining to Duke athletics.

Kentucky has players recruiting for them. This link discusses Alex Legion and his atttempt to sway Patrick Patterson.  There is a quote from Buster Patterson too.

Buster Patterson Quote -

Florida Coach Billy Donovan visited Patterson's home on Wednesday. The player's father, Buster Patterson, described the visit as friendly and low key. "A nice little visit," the elder Patterson said. "What else can you say? He's been courting us since Day One."

Meanwhile, Patrick attended a fundraiser in West Virginia.  His high school team, the state champion Higlanders have helped the community in many ways

As I told my premium members two days ago, West Virginia is out of the Patterson sweepstakes.

Have you been reading up on the NCAA cracking down on text messaging?  If not, you can catch up here.  Duke is one of the few, and I do mean few schools that hasn't abused text messaging.  Oh, they use it, but the Blue Devil Staff keeps it real.  A recruit will never get an unexpected text message while he is in class from Duke.

In this article, Justin Young does a great job in covering the weekends AAU events.  Many Duke prospects are mentioned, so check it out!

If you haven't heard of Greg Monroe, you do not keep up with Duke Basketball recruiting. Greg is the top rated players in next years class.  He is a great read from the Times-Biscayne, which discusses the jam of spectators and coaches that view his games.

Speaking of NBA early entry, we have Singletary, Wright, Young and Mays from Clemson?  The ACC always has one surprise.  Despite a good game, he needs a lot more polish.  Perhaps he will be back ... perhaps his grades dictate going.

View Article  More on Patterson ...

Well, the BDN was once again ahead of the curve with information, but admittedly some what is in my premium update is in this well written article.  Still, they didn't get all the latest;)

Interestingly, Duke is not mentioned as a favorite.  That role is headed by Kentucky and Florida according to this article.

Hopefully, the Patterson 3 will be impressed when Coach K comes in for the final visit.  You can bet that Duke will be Duke and tell it like it is.  No fancy or exaggerated pitch will be made and no promises of eternal sunshine.

Instead, Duke will tell a recruit what they can do for them and how they fit into their plans.  Furthermore, it will be backed up with facts.  The main fact might be that Coach K is embedded in the program and that he is going nowhere other than to search for Gold for his country.

Duke is family for life.  Don't believe me?  Ask every player who has ever graduated, even those that did not.

Whether Coach K is handling Team USA and the best of the best or if he is acting as an ambassador for college basketball, his word makes people listen.

A simple call has likely been made in many situations over the years.  Be it a reference for the many assistant coaches he has put out, to well, where does one start?

Ex Dukie Billy King is the GM for the Sixers and I am sure Coach K was called when he applied for the job.  Then there was Shavlik Randolph, a player who didn't start for Duke.  Do you think Coach K gave him a push, helping the Sixers gain a player?  Do you think King took K's word?  Can you see how the Duke family works?

This article has me thinking.  I will elaborate further on the advantages of playing college basketball in Durham and how Duke is a life choice that has a verifiable track record, be it producing NBA players to simply giving you a degree that opens many doors.

Stay tuned ...

Alex Legion made it official, in that he will play his college ball with Kentucky.  The Wildcats pulled out all the stops, including a meeting with the Mayor.  Legion had originally signed with Michigan but was granted a release when former Duke player, Tommy Amaker was released and landed at Harvard.

Some of you may remember Sean Singletary stating he would return to UVA. I told my readers to go on thinking that.  The All ACC guard declared for the NBA draft yesterday.  While he hasn't signed with an agent, my sources claim that he will likely stay in, if for no other reason than the shortage of point guards.  This may be enough to make Patrick Patterson eliminate the Wahoos, in that they will be rebuilding.  Add the fact that they had a ridiculously favorable schedule last season and you can bet they will take a step back next season.  The article linked is well written and talks of Jarvaris Crittenton possibly leaving too.  For more information on the Patterson sweepstakes, you can try the premium newsletter, where the very latest awaits you.

Jai Lucas, son of former Durham native John Lucas may make his college choice by this weekend.  Here is an article that claims a decision will come soon.  Many have felt that Jai an Patrick Patterson might be a package deal.  So, if he picks the Wildcats, expect the rumor mill to be in overdrive.  Lucas is down to Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Florida and Maryland.  His brother played for the Cowboys, while his Dad flourished at Maryland under Duke alum, Lefty Driesell.

Oklahoma Coach, former Duke player Jeff Capel, hopes that Jai Lucas considers the Sooners. Freshman guard Bobby Maze left the program, but Capel has three guards signed, not to mention powerful Blake Griffen, a player that was once on the Blue Devils radar.

When it comes to the Asack family, Duke is the choice.  Zack Asack will return this coming season.  He worked hard in the off season to stay in shape..  Despite some who have said he might move to the secondary, the BDN has been told he will remain at quarterback.  He will  be joined on campus by his brother Paul next season.  Paul Asack is a solid kicker, and more.  He plays on defense as well as special teams. IOW, he is an athlete.  It came as no surprise that he wanted to follow in his Dad and brothers footsteps to become the latest future footballer.  Welcome to Duke!

There were some musical lyrics in the sixties that went like this "I fought the law and the law won"  That was the case for a UConn wideout who will miss the Duke game.

View Article  Weekend Review

I think NBADraft.net needs to put the brew down and quit chanel surfing during the game.  Here is their take on the Jordan Brand All Star Game.  I can't help but wonder what they were watching.  They claim that the Royal teams offense looked good when UF bound Parson's and Calathes were in together.  Did anyone else think that?  Nick Calathes was stripped several times, threw one out of control pass for every good one. While Parson's scored some garbage buckets, they froze Patterson out.  In fact, IMHO, Patterson didn't flourish until late in the game when he got away from the second five lineup.  Yeah, I know you think I am a homer ... I am.  But I can honestly say the UF duo looked disjointed at times and I failed to see any real chemistry with Patterson.  Still, Patrick is very much considering the Gators.  More on that in the Blue Devil Nation Premium Newsletter.

Calathes did beat Kyle Singler by one shot in the three point shooting contest.  He certainly has some great skills, but Singler proved he deserved all of his hype to the entire nation.  He is a link on the outstanding Duke commitment which is definitely worth a look.

Here is a notebook from CSTV on the Jordan Brand All Star Game.

Everybody wants to count Duke out of the Patterson race. This is from the Orlando Sentinal -

One of Billy Gillispie's new assistants at Kentucky is Glenn Cyprien, who was an assistant to Stan Heath at Arkansas last season. Coincidentally, one of Cyprien's wife's best friends is Debbie Lucas -- the mother of perhaps the nation's best unsigned point guard, Jai Lucas of Houston. Lucas and highly recruited PF Patrick Patterson, from Huntington, W.Va., are likely to sign with the same school, and it might come down to UK and Florida. On Saturday, Lucas and Patterson competed in the Jordan Brand Classic All-Star Game in New York. Two others who competed were Lake Howell's Nick Calathes and Chandler Parsons, both of whom have signed with UF. Gee, you think Calathes and Parsons did some wooing over the weekend?

Here is Rivals take on the Kingwood Classic, an AAU event that I will talk more on in the newsletter later today.

Is it me or does Jai Lucas seem to be riding the coattails of Patrick Patterson.  Jai is the son of former Durham Hillside and Maryland star, John Lucas.   John struggled mightily with addiction problems, but is now talking of his former demons in many in AAU circles.  Still, John is not shy of the media and many feel as if he has marketed his son in order to get him on the McDonald's All American team.  Jai seems to want to be a package deal with Patrick Patterson and Kentucky and Florida have jumped heavily into his recruitment.  Rumors and I do men rumors persist that Jai had hoped Duke would join the battle for his services, but while the Blue Devils see Jai as having a very nice game, he doesn't seem to fit into their plans.  With unselfish swing guard, Nolan Smith coming in and a healthy Greg Paulus expected back without having to play on a broken foot all season long, I can see why.  On the other hand, Duke can offer Patterson a chance to pretty much start for a basketball media giant, having an obvious opening for a player with his talent.  Knowing John, his spirited or animated antics will likely continue and that would have indeed stolen the spotlight from other parents had he landed behind the Duke bench, where family and sharing the spot light are the norm.  I understand a Father wanting what is best for himself, but not so much for what is best for him too.  In watching young Jai, it is obvious that he has skills, being a quick and unselfish PG prospect.  Still, at 5-8, he will likely be posted up quite a bit during his career.  I see him as a solid player and he seems to be a very nice young man, but his ascension to the top of rankings and making the McDonald's All American game has as much to do with hype as it does his actual play.  Of course, that is my opinion and I could certainly be wrong.  He is a link on the  Houston area PG prospect where he was impressed with Billy Donavan
