DeMarcus Nelson has been selected as Captain of the 2007-2008 Blue Devils. "DeMarcus has grown into quite a leader," coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "This has been recognized by his teammates and coaches, so instead of having multiple leaders we are looking for DeMarcus to do that on his own this year. We are all really excited for him." Duke is looking for a kicker and held open tryouts in an effort to produce one. Joe Surgan just isn't getting the job done, despite his press clippings from high school where he was supposedly one of the nation's best. The frustration hit its limit as he missed a chip shot FG and extra point versus Navy. The sad truth is that Duke would likely have three more victorys in the past two seasons with a couple of succesful kicks.

If you've been to Cameron you may have noticed that the speaker system left a lot to be desired. In fact, the system had been in place since the seventies and the distortion was terrible. That has now changed. Duke installed state of the art speakers all around Cameron. My understating is that there are between 54 and 60 in all. There is no seat that will not benefit from this needed upgrade. In fact, I'd say they could really crank it up it they want to. Anyhow, here is your first look at them. You will notice two different types, one which may be sub woofers.

The taste of VICTORY! Northwestern has four shots, but comes up empty. Duke student hurt during celebration Saturday, September 15

Box Score Duke played a wonderful offensive first half only to crawl in a shell in the second half. But when the game was on the line, the defense rose to the occasion and Duke ended the nation's longest losing streak defeating Northwestern 20-14. It wasn't easy. Duke rode the first half passing accuracy of Thad Lewis. Lewis completed almost every pass (14-15) throwing three first half touchdowns. The defense was on the field almost the entire second half and had to hold yet again in the final 77 seconds, but the Cats would go from their 10 yard line to the Blue Devils ten. Duke elected to continually keep the ball on the ground even though they were stuffed all night. It looked as if the Cats who had 500 yards of total offense, would still find a way to win. Northwestern made a couple of big plays before one could get a chip in their mouth. Before you could reach for your drink, Ted Roof challenged a questionable call, but it was not reversed. Suddenly, Northwestern had the ball first and ten on the Duke 31 with 58 seconds left. Northwestern then had another penalty which moved the ball back to the 41. Well, the Northwestern quarterback then ran the ball to the 6. Joe Surgan was probably hiding under the bench after missing an extra point, but there were two more plays left. Roof called a timeout and the defense held. It all came down to fourth down and goal and this time the ball went incomplete and the Blue Devils mercifully ended their steak with defensive pressure. You could hear a sigh of relief from Blue Devils nationwide. "It was a tough game, we made some mistakes but we were able to pull it out," said Vinnie Rey. He went on, "We got our first win of the season and we're happy." It wasn't pretty, but it was effective and Duke is in the win column. "Nothing is going to come easy for us," said Coach Roof. It certainly wasn't and Northwestern was quick to turn the scoreboard off after the game. "We talked to them all week about having to go earn one. This week we found a way to win," said Coach Roof. Hopefully, this will be a stepping stone for the rest of the season.
