TAMPA, Fla. -- Duke head football coach David Cutcliffe closed out his 19-year tenure as a member of the Tennessee coaching staff on a high note Tuesday afternoon as the 16th-ranked Volunteers defeated 18th-ranked Wisconsin, 21-17, in the Outback Bowl in Tampa, Fla.
Cutcliffe, who directed the Tennessee offense to 431 yards against the Badgers as 60,121 fans looked on at Raymond James Stadium, has now coached in 22 bowl games during his career with 15 victories. Tennessee's assistant head coach and offensive coordinator, he was named Duke’s 21st head football coach on December 15, 2007.
With the win, Tennessee improves to 10-4 on the year, marking the school’s 20th 10-win campaign. The Volunteers rank second all-time in bowl game appearances (47) and fourth in bowl game triumphs (25).
Volunteer quarterback Erik Ainge earned game MVP honors after completing 25-of-43 pass attempts for 365 yards and two touchdowns. Cutcliffe has mentored five Tennessee quarterbacks that have received bowl game MVP honors in Heath Shuler, Andy Kelly, Peyton Manning, Tee Martin and Ainge.
In his 19 seasons on the Tennessee staff, Cutcliffe helped the Volunteers to an overall ledger of 173-54-7 with 11 bowl wins.
