View Article  Kyle Singler on NC State, K's attempt at 800 and throwing the football

Duke Freshman Kyle Singler talks hoops and more during today's press conference -

How many stitches have you had this season?

(Grinning) I'm not completely sure, but probably around thirty.

The last time you said 23 ...

Yeah, I lost count after twenty three.

Is this the first time you have had to body up against big guys like you have?  Does it have anything to do with it?

I'd say it definitely contributes.  Just the amount of the risk.  I am just more in the action ... the elbows.  Sometime I put myself in position.  If you can heal it, I don't mind it.

Jon mentioned hitting a little bit of a freshman wall last season ...  This being the first time you've played in so many big games.  How do you feel at this point of the season?

I feel good right now.  The Coaches have done a good job keeping us fresh.  The same with our conditioning coach.  I feel strong physically and mentally.  Those two aspects are important going into the post season.

Did you think you would play this much going into the season, especially down low?

Coach K told me to just be a player and I'd find myself on the court.   Really I didn't know how many minutes I was going to play.  I'd much rather be out on the court.  Conditioning is a big part in college basketball.  Sometimes you can wear a team down in the second half.  For us, we've done a great time of being in great shape, but still getting our rest, keeping ourselves fresh, our bodies.  We get some extra running in and our conditioning is great.

What are your thoughts on Coach K going for his 800th win, what does it mean?

It means a whole lot.  Coach K hasn't brought it up.  We don't think he will.  We know we can get him his 800th win and it's a big deal.  I think only five other coaches have reached that point.  It's very important for us to come out and play with a little bit more of an edge and help get that win for him.

How did playing football help you prepare for basketball?

I think sports is general helps  Basically I have played football, hockey and baseball all my life.  I would say each sport has helped me in some sort of way.  I can't really pinpoint which helped the most.

Tell me about the flea flicker?

(Smiling)  The Flea Flicker?

Yeah, tell me about that play (referring to a big one in high school)?

It was like an 80 something yard pass.  My whole career I grew up in fun.  I was very fortunate.

So, did you like the contact in football?

Oh definitely.  I liked playing defense more than anything.  (Paused briefly) I just wish we could hit people out there (on the court, shifting his eyes towards the floor).  This brought a chuckle to the room.  Kyle had the media in his hands at this point.  Kyle played outside LB in HS)

I definitely don't go inside looking for contact.  Basketball has been more of a physical sport in college than I imagined.  In highs school you don;t get that contact, but in college it is very physical.

How will you keep Greg off NCSU's big players when you switch on defense?

We do a lot of switching which creates a lot of mismatches.  We've been doing a lot of work this week with over screens switching as much as we do.  Just looking at matchups it could be a key.  We are just doing the best job we can at minimizing opportunities at getting bad matchups.  Greg just needs to fight over screens and we need to talk more.

What are your thoughts on the Wolfpack?

State is a very good team.  They have a lot of talent on their team.  Definitely at there place it will be a tough game.  It's a great environment to play in.  This game will be a war and we are definitely looking forward to it.

Of the three former quarterbacks on the team, who can throw the farthest?  (Paulus was one of the top ranked players in the nation and Nelson was a stud in California before sitting out his senior season)

We might have to see, but (Smiling) I have no idea, but we'll see.  We'll get out there and the summer some time and throw the ball around.

How far can you throw the ball on the sly?

I'd say about 85 yards.  (Thought a second) Eighty, eighty.

The Sporting News has an article up which states Coach K is more valuable than his than his 799 wins.  Well, we know that but it is still a good read.  Jeff Goodman has jumped back on the bandwagon saying the Duke defense and Henderson has Duke back on track.  Now that was real hard to notice, eh?  Okay, okay at least the media is saying nice things about the Blue Devils.

WRAL talks of Paulus and Singler helping one another reach their potential.  There has been some nice chemistry between the two of late.  The Chronicle talks of Coach K going for win number 800 versus N.C. State tomorrow at noon.

In Blue Devils LAX, #4 Maryland will take on #2 Duke in Durham.  Here is a preview of that early season matchup.  If you are in the area, you should take in this sure to be exciting match.

Here is Al Featherston on Brian Zoubek.  Zoubek can play an important role versus the Packs tall front line.  The big guy and staff are looking for consistency and to build on his St. John's game performance.

Duke 71  Georgia Tech 58

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) -- Gerald Henderson and DeMarcus Nelson both scored 15 points and Duke (No. 6 ESPN/USA Today, No. 7 AP) beat Georgia Tech 71-58 on Wednesday night to move into a first-place tie in the Atlantic Coast Conference with rival North Carolina.

Kyle Singler added 13 points and Greg Paulus had 11 to help the Blue Devils (24-3, 11-2) improve to 15-0 at Cameron Indoor Stadium this season and win their second straight since a two-game losing streak on the road.

Matt Causey and Gani Lawal had 10 points each to lead the Yellow Jackets (11-15, 4-8), who lost their fifth straight and were denied their first victory at Cameron since 2004. Duke has won 10 of the past 11 meetings here.

Georgia Tech's leading scorer, Anthony Morrow -- who entered averaging 14.3 points -- was held to nine on 4-of-9 shooting.

Duke never trailed in the second half and led by double figures for most of the way, but the Yellow Jackets briefly made things interesting when Morrow's 3 with 2:40 remaining pulled them to 65-57. About 30 seconds later, Nelson threw a pretty bounce pass to Henderson, who finished the layup that restored their double-figure advantage.

The perimeter-oriented Blue Devils led 33-27 at halftime despite some horrible shooting from the outside. Duke, a 39 percent shooting team from 3-point range, made just two jump shots in the half and was 1-of-11 from beyond the arc.

Duke missed 12 of its first 13 attempts from 3-point range before Paulus connected from the key with 9 minutes to play to give the Blue Devils a 56-44 lead. They finished just 2-of-15 from long range.

Meanwhile, Georgia Tech had serious trouble getting to the free-throw line. The Yellow Jackets didn't attempt a foul shot until Causey sank two with 9 1/2 minutes left after he was hammered by Paulus while driving, and finished 7-of-11 from the line.

This past weekend was a whirlwind of events for the Plumlee family.  During a visit to the Triangle, their three sons won a state title.   One of them ended up knowing Durham would be his future home and made public his commitment to Duke University early this morning.   Mason Plumlee becomes the first prospect in the class of 2009 to commit Duke.  The Blue Devil Nation has covered his recruitment tirelessly and we will have more detaila in our premium section later today.  "Mason is frantically catching up on his schoolwork," said his proud Mom Leslie in a conversation earlier this morning.  Mason takes his academics seriously, as do all students at Christ School.  The word we got from his camo is that he wants to relax and catch up before he starts answering numerous phone calls in search of an interview.  Congrats Mason and welcome to Duke!  Check back tomorrow for our artcile will be on the free board.

"Duke is the perfect fit for Mason and Mason is the perfect fit for Duke," said Christ School coach David Gaines

The Plumlees are now a part of an even bigger family called Duke Basketball!

Mark's take - Duke looks to right the ship after consecutive ACC losses.  I would imagine that these Devils will be focused on the job at hand.  The recent play of Brian Zoubek has been encouraging, so look for hi  to try and build on his performance versus St. John's.

The Yellow Jackets are pushing for an NIT bid, but they are athletic and capable of beating teams who overlook them.  They will try and run with Duke which will likely make this a high scoring game.  This is one team in which Duke averages more rebounds.  If the Duke takes care of business on the glass and their shots are falling it could be a long night for the visitors.  Overlook Tech and they can sting you.

Tech will hold their own early, but look for Duke to pull away as the game goes on.  It will be important for Duke to bring a balanced attack.  Duke 87 Georgia Tech 69

Bob Green's take - a struggling Georgia Tech team visits Cameron Indoor Stadium Wednesday night. The Yellow Jackets are 4 - 7 in conference play and the losers of four straight games. However, Georgia Tech's last victory was on the road over Wake Forest, on Feb 6th, so the Blue Devils need to be leery of looking past the Rambling Wreck.

Georgia Tech is dead last in the ACC in Scoring Defense, FG Percent Defense, and Defensive Rebounds. They are ranked below Duke in 16 of 17 statistical categories. Yes, you guessed it, Georgia Tech shoots Free Throws better than Duke.

With four regular season games remaining, Duke is looking to finish strong and build momentum heading into the ACC and NCAA tournaments. The big showdown with UNC, on March 8th, is already on everyone's mind, but Duke must win their next three games first. Coach K will have the players focused on the task at hand.

Duke is a 15.5 point favorite and they will cover the spread. However, solid play and a victory is all that is important. In the big picture, margin of victory is irrelevant.

My prediction: Duke 90 - Georgia Tech 70.

View Article  Chante Black earns ACC Player of the Week

DURHAM, N.C. – After leading 11th-ranked Duke to two Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) victories and scoring 20 or more points in both contests over the weekend, Blue Devil junior Chante Black was named ACC Player of the Week on Monday.

The honor for Black is the first of her career and marks the first time a Duke student-athlete has earned ACC Player of the Week this season. A Blue Devil has now received at least one weekly ACC award in 15 straight years.

Black averaged 21.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 1.0 blocked shot last week for the Blue Devils. On Sunday against Virginia, the junior registered a career-high 22 points to go along with eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks. She hit 7-of-11 field goals and 8-of-9 free throws in the game. The victory for Duke clinched the No. 3 seed for the Blue Devils in the upcoming ACC Tournament.

A product of Winston-Salem, N.C., Black registered 20 points, five rebounds, four steals and one assist in 28 minutes at Virginia Tech on Friday. The 6-5 center hit 7-of-14 field goals and 6-of-8 free throws in the contest.

On the week, Black hit 56.0 percent of her field goals and 82.4 percent from the charity stripe. In addition, Black has started all 28 games this season and has totaled double-figure scoring in 24 of those 28 contests.

Boston College’s Carolyn Swords was named ACC Rookie of the Week.

Duke will next travel down Tobacco Road to face second-ranked North Carolina on Sunday, March 2 at 5:30 p.m., in Chapel Hill, N.C.

View Article  Duke defeats Cavs to lock up third place in the ACC

The Blue Devils closed out their home season by defeating Virginia 78-70 on Senior Day.   The win assures the Devils of a third place seeding in the upcoming ACC Tournament.  Wanisha Smith made two free throws with 5:04 remaining in the second half which enabled Duke to pull even at 61 apiece.

Duke then had three consecutive steals, taking advantage of two to go up 65-61.  Two of those steals were made by freshman Jasmine Thomas and the other Careem Gay.  The Blue Devils never looked back after trailing by nine earlier in the half eventually going on a back breaking 11-0 run.

Wanisha Smith hit this key lay up to give Duke a 63-61 lead and the Devils never looked back.

"I think it was defense and learning from our previous games to have to fight to figure out a way when we're down in the second half to get a lead and keep the lead.  Just learning from previous games helped us a lot," said the senior Smith.

The Dukies were led by Chante Black's career high 22 points.  Wanisha Smith added 16 in her last game in Cameron.  She was honored along with Emily Waner at games end.  Duke had a 49-5 record at home during Smiths four year stint.

It seems like just yesterday when I snapped a picture Smith, who was then a rising senior in high school.  She visited Duke with Candace Parker of Tennessee during that recruiting weekend.  Candace got Shelden, but we got Wanisha and she proved to be a solid player over the years.

Duke will now travel to North Carolina to close their season next Sunday.  That game will be televised by Fox Sports Net at 5:50 p.m.  Duke is now 10-3 in the league and 21-7 overall.  Duke tied a season high with 24 free throws made on 30 attempts.  he Blue Devils also forced 22 turnovers, making this the 20th time that has happened this season.

Duke 86 St. John's 56

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - Brian Zoubek recorded a double-double and Kyle Singler led five double-figure scorers with 16 points and No. 5 Duke routed St. John's 86-56 on Saturday to snap its two-game losing streak.

Gerald Henderson and Nolan Smith scored 13 points apiece for the Blue Devils (23-3), who overwhelmed the Red Storm with a 32-9 run late in the first half and cruised to their NCAA-leading 59th straight nonconference victory at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Jon Scheyer added 12 points in his first start of the season and Zoubek had 11 points and a career-high 13 rebounds for Duke, which showed none of the ballhandling or defensive problems that plagued coach Mike Krzyzewski's team in losses at Wake Forest and Miami.

Instead, the Blue Devils got things clicking again at the expense of a young St. John's team that has eight freshmen in the rotation. Duke, which allowed an average of 91 points in the two defeats, forced the Big East's worst offense into 18 turnovers, limited it to 3-of-13 shooting from 3-point range and held it to two field goals during a 9½-minute first-half stretch.

Anthony Mason Jr., who leads the Red Storm (10-16) with a 15.2-point average, was held to four on 2-of-11 shooting. Freshman D.J. Kennedy had 16 points to lead the Red Storm, the last non-Atlantic Coast Conference team to win at Cameron.

Almost exactly eight years ago, they came here and knocked off the Blue Devils 86-85. But this time, Duke denied them their first road victory against a ranked opponent under coach Norm Roberts and instead sent them to their fourth straight loss.

Scheyer, a starter in 2006-07 who has flourished in his sophomore season as Duke's sixth man, replaced Henderson in the lineup. Henderson played with a brace protecting his injured right wrist, and Krzyzewski said on his pregame radio show that the sophomore guard will require surgery on it after the season.

Scheyer scored 12 points during the decisive run, and Singler bookended it. He started the burst with a 3-pointer from the left wing midway through the half that made it 18-16 and put the Blue Devils ahead to stay, then capped it with a layup from Smith that pushed the lead to 47-25 1:06 before the break.

View Article  St. John's at Duke

Mark's take - Duke will try to implement their will on St. John's tomorrow after dropping two conference games in a row.  The Devils got back to basics in practice this week, concentrating on defense and playing as a cohesive unit.  Duke is still nursing some injuries.  I feel as if Duke will rebound and use this game to make some adjustments on the court and in their minds.  The pick here is Duke 85 St. John's 63

Bob Green's take - The St. John's Redmen travel to Cameron Indoor Stadium as a 22 point underdog to a Duke club that has lost its last two games. I'm not sure there is ever a good time for non-conference opponents to play at CIS, Duke has defeated 58 straight non-ACC opponents at home, but St.John's timing couldn't be worse. Duke will be out to prove the two road losses were an anomaly by taking it to the Redmen for 40 minutes.

St. John's enters the game with a 10-15 record and riding a three game losing streak. They turn the ball over 15.3 times per game and only make 40.7% of their field goal attempts. I expect them to struggle to achieve those numbers against a Duke team that will focus on defense after two subpar performances. With Duke pressuring the ball, St. John's will turn it over often and Duke will force the Redmen into bad shot selection when they don't turn it over.

On offense, Duke has stated they desire to look inside for points. It will be interesting to see if Brian Zoubek can be an offensive factor in this game. His play has been improving as he returns to game shape after re-injuring the foot he had surgery on over the summer. I wouldn't be suprised to see the starting line-up shaken up for this game.

My prediction: Duke 84 - St. John's 58

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) -- Looking to bounce back from their first league loss, the Duke Blue Devils instead stumbled again.

The Miami Hurricanes beat Duke (No. 4 ESPN/USA Today, No. 5 AP) for the first time in 45 years Wednesday, scoring 15 consecutive points to build a big lead early in the second half and holding on to win 96-95.

Ranked No. 2 just last week, the Blue Devils (22-3 overall, 10-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) lost for the second time in four days.

Miami (18-7, 5-6) beat Duke for the first time since the first game in the series Dec. 21, 1962. The Blue Devils had won all 10 games since.

View Article  It's just a bump in the road folks!

The game just ended and Duke lost to Miami by one but I am already over it.  Sure it hurts and yes the media will have their fun and the UNC fans will howl.  Still, the sun will rise and when it does Duke is still tied for the lead in the ACC.  Not only are they tied for the ACC lead, they are one up on their arch rival which would give the Dukies the regular season title if it ended today.

True, there are more games to go and that's a good thing.  You see, it is far from over and in the end it's how the Blue Devils play in March.  This is a relatively young team that is learning a tough lesson or two, but they will harden and grow from the back to back losses.  Nobody thought Duke would even be in the Top Ten, much less atop the ACC.

I've seen a lot of Duke Basketball games fover the years olks!  I have seen adversity before with both good and great teams.  There is another thing I saw tonight though which was familiar.  That being the look in the Blue Devils eyes.  It's the same hurt I saw after the Pitt game.  Duke is frustrated right now and believe me nobody wants to take on a Duke team with a chip on it's shoulder.

Even more familiar than the players look was Coach K at games end.  He has seen this before from a much better angle than me and he has consistently adapted.  This is a great group of kids who are more lovable than likable to this supporter.  I will win with them and lose with them, but more importantly I will back them when they need a fan the most.

Yep!  I rest better knowing this team will be back to their winning ways soon enough and I will be there with them starting this Saturday against St. Johns.  Duke will adjust and as fans we must do the same.  Trust me, the ride has just begun and I will surely wear my Duke attire as proud as ever tomorrow.

Finally, there is the so-called squabble between Roy Williams and Coach K.  Some feel as if Coach K directed some comments towards Roy and UNC, but it was veiled at best.  Everybody seems to have a take on this one, but what is not mentioned in most local articles is that Williams took what seemingly looks like the first shot when he talked, again in a somewhat veiled way about Duke's marketing.

We all know that the Duke-UNC feud is deep, but until those comments it seemed as if it had died down a bit.  Perhaps K did get under Williams skin.  I mean, Roy sort of lost his composure during a recent press conference uttering a curse word and some substitutes where curse words might normally be used.  K had no response, and why would he with the Miami game in just over 24 hours.

There is no doubt that K's language in the past has been a bit suspect at times in practice or on the court, but what many seem to ignore is that Williams mouth is just as bad but in a different way.  I remember everybody saying K would have trouble with the new rules this season regarding language.  Well, his one technical was for coming out of the box.  At least the FCC won't be calling him.  Trust me, you see a lot on the recruiting trails when coaches don't think anyone is listening in.  Hopefully, the latest will be water under the bridge in due time.

Like I said, everybody has a take.  Okay, enough already!  Here is a link which talks of the percentages which may be necessary for ACC teams to get into the NCAA's

It was the last game of the year for American Heritage and Kenny Boyton Jr.  His team fell to Pincrest who was led by Brandon Knights 38 points.

Bob Green's take - my prognosticator confidence level took a big hit when I was so wrong about the Wake Forest game, but I've taken three deep breaths and I'm ready to jump back into the fray. Duke needs to respond, after suffering their second loss of the season, with a solid performance in Coral Gables. It is important to note that the team doesn't need a dominating win they need to win with a solid performance. I anticipate a return to the recipe that has brought success all season: balanced scoring, taking care of the basketball, and defensive pressure.

To win Duke will need to do all the things they did in the first game. The Blue Devils shot 40% from beyond the 3-point arc to the Canes 27.3%, outrebounded the Canes 37 - 34, dished out 13 assists to Miami's 11, turned the ball over 11 times compared to 14 for Miami, and outscored Miami from the Free Throw line 26 - 12. The result was a solid 88 - 73 victory.

Duke is in the driver's seat of the ACC race and a win over Miami on the road is the next important step. With Gerald Henderson struggling with his midrange game due to his injured wrist and Jon Scheyer in a shooting slump, Nolan Smith needs to step up his game on both ends of the court. Nolan played magnificently against Wake Forest and he must build on that performance as we rapidly approach March and tournament time. We also need Jon Scheyer to find his stroke. Jon is shooting 35.1% (13 - 37) from the field in the month of February after shooting 47.4% (27 - 57) in January.

My prediction: Duke 78 - Miami 72.

Mark's take - Duke has had very little time to think about the Wake Forest loss before they take the long trip to southern Florida to face Miami.  The Hurricane's played a very physical game in Durham before Duke pulled away at the end.  You have heard talk of wounded teams and Miami fits that mold.  While they have a nice overall record they have stumbled in the conference.

It will be important for Greg Paulus to be on his game this evening, not to mention Jon Scheyer and other Devils who had a sub par game in the last outing.  This game is important in the race for the regular season for Duke and a Blue Devil win would send Miami's NCAA hopes reeling.  That said, bet on a physical game unless Duke can take the home crowd and Canes out with their three point shooting.  One thing for certain is that you will see a lot of effort on the courts.

I have faith that Coach K will right the ship and Duke will escape with a 84-73 win.

Gminski is one of only 23 players in ACC history to have been named first-team All-ACC three times (1978-80). He was a second-team All-America in 1978 and 1980 and earned consensus All-America honors in 1979.

He is also the only three-time Academic All-America in Duke history and was a three-time member of the ACC’s All-Academic Basketball team from 1978-80.

Gminski went on to the NBA where he was selected in the first round of the 1980 draft by the New Jersey Nets. He played 14 seasons of professional basketball with New Jersey, Philadelphia, Charlotte and Milwaukee. He currently is a Fox Sports college basketball analyst for Sunday’s ACC telecasts.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - All five starters fouled out for the first time in school history as the second-ranked Duke Blue Devils lost just their second game of the season in a 86-73 loss against Wake Forest here at Lawrence Joel Coliseum Sunday night.

The Blue Devils fall to 22-2 on the season and still remain atop the ACC standings with a 10-1 league record while the Demon Deacons improve to 16-8 overall and 6-5 in the league.

It marked the fifth time in Duke history that five players have fouled out, but the first time it was all five starters.  Duke had five players foul out at Maryland on Feb. 12, 2005, and here at Wake Forest on Feb. 13, 2003, under Coach K and twice against North Carolina in the 1950s and '60s.

All five Blue Devil Starters foul out in a game they hope will be a learning experience

Nolan Smith led the way for Duke off the bench with 21 points and he was the Blue Devils go-to player down the stretch.  He connected on 8-of-12 from the field and had a pair of three-pointers.  DeMarcus Nelson scored 15 of his 18 points in the first half while Kyle Singler scored 17 points for the Blue Devils.

Smith scored the Blue Devils final seven points after the final media timeout as the Blue Devils pulled within six at 76-70 with 2:36 remaining and again at 78-72 with 1:48 left, both off of lay-ups from Smith.  Duke then had a pair of misses and six straight free throws from the Demon Deacons put the game into double digits at 84-72.

Wake Forest started strong out of the gate, connecting on four quick three-pointers and storming out to a 19-12 lead just over six minutes in.  The Blue Devils were giving up less than four threes per game in ACC play.  Duke chipped away at the lead and a Nelson lay-up with 9:13 remaining in the first half gave Duke its first lead at 25-24.  The teams played the remainder of the first half close with neither team getting more than a four point lead until Jamie Skeen's tip-in as the first half clock expired, giving the Deacs a 47-42 lead at the break.

After L.D. Williams had a monster dunk and three pointer on back-to-back possessions, Wake Forest opened up a 52-44 lead just three minute into the second half.  Duke responeded with an 11-0 run over the next three minutes to go up 55-52.  A Smith three and Singler layup gave Duke a 60-55 lead at the 11:22 mark but the Blue Devils wouldn't hit another field goal for more than seven minutes and were outscored 17-3 during that run.  Greg Paulus hit a three-pointer to pull Duke within six at 72-66 before Smith's final seven points.

Duke will look to rebound when it travels to Coral Gables, Fla., to take on the Miami Hurricanes Wednesday night in a 9 p.m. tipoff on the ACC's TV package from RAYCOM.  Duke then returns home for the final non-conference game of the year as St. John's travel to Cameron Indoor Stadium next Saturday at 4 p.m. on CBS.
