You may already know that Kyle Singler was named Rookie of the Week. Call me a homer if you must, but I can objectively tell you he's a lock in my mind to win the ACC Rookie of the Year Award. The mere fact that he will be on a winning team more than trumps JJ Hickson in my opinion. Speaking of rookies, one that might want to make a name for himself against Singler is Jack Johnson of Wake Forest. These two will lock horns this weekend.
I am not one to choose All ACC teams just yet, but I have certainly discussed the possibilities for first team with sportswriters and friends. Everybody agrees that Tyler Hansbrough and DeMarcus Nelson are locks, but that's when it gets interesting. In years past, players from winning teams generally get and edge. Let's take a look at the possibilities -
Vasquez and Gist of Maryland - A victory over Duke might be the signature win these two need to make their case. Both have been mentioned frequently in conversations by those who pick and discuss their early teams. Gist certainly made a statement during the NC State game as did Vasquez.
Ty Lawson of UNC - I think it's obvious that this guy motors his team, but the question may be does he make it if UNC loses a couple of more down the stretch. Most have Ty as a lock, but when two players from the same team make it, they are generally from the conferences top team. Still, he is likely to land a spot, but nobody past Nelson and Hansbrough are locks in my mind.
Tyrese Rice of Boston College or Sean Singletary of Virginia - At one time I thought Singletary was a must, but no more. UVA's horrid performance and Rice's play for the season makes this an easy choice for me at this point. But hey, there are a lot of games left and that's why I hate speculating too much this early.
Kyle Singler of Duke - So, he's a freshman! Can you point to any other player who might be more responsible than him? Okay, maybe you can. Henderson and Paulus are having good years to as are others. It remains to be seen whether Dukes depth and balance might work against them, but if they win the regular season, I think you could make a case for Kyle.
I think you will see Gavin Grant from N.C. State mentioned some. McClinton in Miami will be held back from his teams record from any serious discussion. Wake is too balanced to have anyone of serious mention. Clemson may well have two players on second team. Tech seems a bit too balanced to have anyone mentioned as does Florida State. Washington is the best at Virginia Tech, but he might make second team. Anyhow, there is some balling left, but the picture will start to clear after games like Maryland at Duke on Wednesday night.
Stumble It!
