View Article  It's Official, King to transfer

Taylor King has decided to leave Duke University, school officials announced Monday. King saw action in all 34 games in 2007-08, averaging 5.9 points and 2.0 rebounds per game.
The Huntington Beach, Calif., native finished the season with 43 three-point field goals to rank eighth in the Duke freshman record books. He also shot 38.7 percent (43-of-111) from three-point distance to rank seventh among freshman at Duke. King had a pair of 20-point games, including a 27-point outburst against Eastern Kentucky on Nov. 25. The 6-6, 230-pound forward went 9-of-14 from the field, including 6-of-11 from three-point range, in the win over Eastern Kentucky.

"Taylor is a solid young man and has the ability to be a good player," said Krzyzewski. "We support him in his decision to transfer and wish him the best of luck in the future."

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (AP) — Patrice Reado scored all 17 of her points in the second half and Texas A&M overcame the loss of standout Danielle Gant to beat Duke, giving the Aggies the school's first berth in the regional finals.

Takia Starks added 15 points for second-seeded Texas A&M (29-7), which extended its winning streak to 12 games and will play either top-seeded Tennessee or fifth-seeded Notre Dame on Tuesday for berth in the Final Four.

Texas A&M coach Gary Blair said before the game that the Aggies would prefer to keep the score in the 50s or 60s against a high-octane Duke team. Third-seeded Duke (25-10) helped the Aggies with that strategy, committing 19 turnovers and never managing to get into an offensive rhythm against a team that led the Big 12 Conference in scoring defense.

Chante Black, who had a career-high 26 points and season-high 13 rebounds in a second round win over Arizona State, led the Blue Devils with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

View Article  Devils finish off the year with a disappointing loss to West Virginia

West Virginia 73  Duke 67     Box Score

The wheels came off of the Duke wagon today when West Virginia sent the Devils packing and wondering how they couldn't find a way to put the ball in the basket in the beginning of the second half.  On this afternoon, the Dukies truly died by the three pointer and their inability to hit the boards during the games key moments.  The Mountaineers out-rebounded Duke 47-27 scoring 17 points on offensive rebounding.

DeMarcus Nelson closed out his senior year with a dreadful game from the field scoring just 6 points.  Unlike the rest of the Blue Devils, he will not be around to avenge the bitter ending to this season.  It is certainly a game that both fans and players want to forget about, but that will be hard in that most of the media will use this loss to take multiple shots and the sad truth is that Duke has not shown the ability to go deep in the NCAA's in the last couple of seasons.

Duke looked shaken and tired as the game went on.  The effort was there but it wasn't enough to offset Duke not playing it's usual style of scoring easy baskets and padding the lead with the three ball.  After leading by five at the half, Duke imploded on the offensive end in the second half.  No matter how you cut it Duke was outplayed and the team seemed to have very tired legs, many shots going off the front of the rim.

It's no wonder that the fatigue helped produce the worst offensive performances this season.   Give credit to West Virginia for their toughness and not allowing Duke one single point on the break.

Only time will tell if this team which returns all but one player can use this defeat as motivation.  Unfortunately, it will be a long time before the ball is thrown into play for Duke again and you can bet that the anti Duke media will be there to remind all of the loss in the months to come.

Still, this team won some big games this season, defeating the top ranked Tar Heels and many of teams still in the tournament.  Duke will regroup over the summer and tweak the areas of the game which contributed to the loss and late season swoon.  While this is an especially bitter defeat, I can still say I am proud to be a Duke fan and can't wait to hit the AAU trail to see who the future Blue Devils might be.  Nobody likes the losses, but this was a fun team to watch and they'll work hard to make sure this doesn't happen next season.  Duke finishes the 2007-08 season 28-6.

Mark's take - Duke squeaked past Belmont to make it to the second round where they will take on another pesky team in West Virginia.  The Mountaineers go about eight players deep and are led by Joe Alexander, a player who goes inside and out.  Alexander, Ruoff, Butler and Nichols all score in double figures.  Wellington Smith adds 55 blocks and often mans the middle.

Duke will likely attack the guards and go right back to their pressure defense.  Belmont seemed a step quicker all night long in the opener, causing Duke to back off playing the passing lanes late in the game.  I fully expect Duke to regroup and come out playing hard from beginning to end advancing to the Sweet 16.  This of course is if they hit their three point shots and take care of the ball and hit a decent percentage from the free throw stripe.  The pick here is Duke 77 West Virginia 71

Bob Green's take - the struggle against Belmont took me by suprise, but we survived and advanced. Today, our opponent is another school that likes the perimeter game. West Virginia took 721 3-point shots this season and made 259 or 35.9% of them. They also take care of the basketball averaging only 11.1 turnovers per contest.

Joe Alexander, a 6'8" 230 pound forward, is their leading scorer at 16.7 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game. Duke's first action item will be to contain Alexander. Next, the Blue Devils must defend the 3-point line and force West Virginia to attempt contested 2-point shots. In their win over Arizona, the Mountaineers were successful on 11 of 19 3-point attempts. 6'6" Alex Ruoff went five for seven and 6'3" Darris Nichols went four for seven from behind the arc. Duke must do a better job defending West Virginia's perimeter players.

On offense, we need to attack inside and challenge West Virginia to stop us. We need to get the Mountaineers into foul trouble and convert from the free throw line. Once the inside game is working, we need to knock down our outside shots.  Finally, West Virginia plays an eight man rotation with four players averaging over 30 minutes per game. We must utilize our depth and have fresh legs at crunch time.  I envision a tough game for 40 minutes but ultimately Duke will prevail.

My prediction: Duke 75 - West Virginia 70.

View Article  Duke survives Belmont 's upset bid 71-70

Duke 71  Belmont 70              Box Score

Gerald Henderson went coast to coast to score the final two points of the game.  His basket helped Duke to a one point victory in the opening round  of the NCAA Tournament.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Mighty, mighty Duke let teeny, tiny Belmont play with the big boys. And, for stretches, get the better of them.

No. 2-seeded Duke actually trailed in the final 15 seconds before barely avoiding the monumental upset, using every last one of Gerald Henderson's 21 points to edge No. 15 Belmont 71-70 in the first round of the West Regional on Thursday night.

While Belmont couldn't quite pull off the stunner, it was surprising enough how close this game was. In a matchup between a school with three NCAA titles — that would be Duke, of course — and another that has three NCAA tournament games in its history.  It was Henderson's driving basket with 11.9 seconds left that erased Belmont's final lead.

After ACC defensive player of the year DeMarcus Nelson stole the ensuing inbounds pass, he was fouled, but he missed at the line. Belmont got the rebound, and one final chance to make history, with 2.2 seconds left. The Bruins' leading scorer, Justin Hare, got a good look at the basket from about 40 feet away, but his shot clanged off the iron. He winced, and Duke celebrated as though it had won far more than an opening-round game — something it actually failed to do a year ago.

Duke (28-5) advanced this time to face Arizona or West Virginia on Saturday.

And Belmont (25-9) can go home with heads held high.

Throughout the game, the teams' body language was telling at timeouts.

More than once, Belmont's players would be trailing, yet they skipped to the sideline and were met with high-fives, pats on the back and yells of encouragement. Duke's players, in the lead but hardly thrilled, trudged over slowly, some looking at the floor.

Only four No. 15s have beaten No. 2s, and there were moments it seemed as though it could happen again.

Duke led 69-65 with 2:40 left, but Andy Wicke (team-high 15 points) made a 3-pointer to cut it to one. And after a Duke miss, Hare grabbed the rebound, was fouled, and made both free throws to give Belmont the lead — yes, the lead! — with 2:02 left in the game.

There it was, plain as could be on the overhead scoreboard, orange numbering on a black background: Belmont 70, Duke 69.

The Bruins couldn't possibly pull this off, could they?

After all, in the Bruins' previous two trips to March Madness, they had led briefly in the first half before getting beaten by more than 20 points — against UCLA in 2006, against Georgetown last year.

Alas, on this night, on the verge of beating one of the sport's most storied programs, Belmont would not score again.

Duke led 42-35 at halftime, an edge built at the foul line, where the Blue Devils were 11-for-15, and the Bruins were 2-for-4.

Otherwise, in nearly every regard, Belmont played Duke even for those first 20 minutes. The field-goal stats were the exact same: 14-for-29.

Bob Green's take - The key to beating Belmont is to pressure the ball and create turnovers. Duke will throw a defensive gauntlet at Belmont and drive the Bruins' offense into chaos. Look for the Blue Devils to apply full court pressure after every made shot or dead ball situation and on offense Duke will run and run. When in their halfcourt offense, Duke will look to take advantage of their size advantage and pound the ball inside to Kyle Singler, Lance Thomas, and Brian Zoubek. Belmont has a thin front line and if Duke can get Matthew Dotson into foul trouble, the Bruins will be in serious trouble.

My prediction: Duke 90 - Belmont 65

Mark's take -  Well, the day is finally here for the NCAA Tournament gets under way in approximately one hour.  Around 5:00 this afternoon, many may be saying to themselves, "I knew I should have picked them."

By now you know the skinny on Belmont whose known as a good three point shooting team that has depth to go with tournament experience.  Well, Duke shoot the three well too, especially when they drive and kick out and that shouldn't be a problem for a team that's motivated and focused on getting to Saturday's game.

The Blue Devils should have no problem working the ball inside and out, but hey, this is the NCAA's and you never know for sure.  Don't think I am selling Belmont short for they are a solid program at their level and deserve respect.  Duke will give them that respect and it will carry them to the next round.  Duke 88 Belmont 67

Duke is 20-5 as a number two seed and they have never won coming into the tournament as a sixth seed or worse.

Duke is 8-4 against the NCAA field, 3-3 versus conference teams.  Duke averages 80.3 PPG and allows 73.4 versus the field..

Since 2000, Duke has played in more tournament game than anybody with that number being 27.  Duke has 14 Final Four appearances and has     played for the National Championship 9 times.

Duke has a winning record in every regional but one.  They are 52-13 in the East, 13-5 in the South, 6-3 in the old or former Southeast, 2-1 in the former Mideast and 10-3 in the Midwest.  The Blue Devils will attempt to gain a winning record in the Western Regional where they are 2-3.

Duke holds a winning NCAA Tournament record in every decade starting with the sixties.  Duke has won 14 Regional Championships.  Duke has participated in 17 Elite Eights and 23 Sweet 16's.

Duke has more wins than any other team in college basketball from 2000 to 2007 with 260, and some of our spoiled fans ask what have you done for me in this decade.  The number speaks for itself.

Duke is 10-0 this season when they shoot better than 50.0% from the field.  Duke is 19-1 when they score 80 or more points.

Duke has had a school record of 7 different 20 point or more scorers this season.  The Blue Devils are 17-2 when at least one player scores 20 points in a game this year.  Duke opponents have had more turnovers than assists in 27 of the 32 games.  And Duke has won how many games?  That's right!

Duke opens their NCAA tournament run against Belmont of Nashville, Tennessee, and the Atlantic Sun Conference. The Belmont Bruins are a guard oriented team that favors the three point shot and does not have a dominant inside presence. The Bruins made 349 of 956 (36.5%) attempts from behind the arc. Duke made 297 of 773 (38.4%) of their 3-point attempts. Belmont's biggest player is 6'8" 220 pound Mathew Dotson who averages 11.3 points and 3.6 rebounds in 21.9 minutes per game. Their leading scorer is 6'2" guard Justin Hare who contributes 14.9 points in 28.4 minutes per game. Shane Dansby, a 6'4" guard-forward, is the team's leading rebounder at 6.2 per game. He also scores 13.8 points per game.

The Blue Devils gained an extra days rest by losing in the ACC tournament semi-finals and Brett Friedlander says, "...the Blue Devils are going to need all of Singler's assets if they hope to advance deep into the NCAA tournament." Luciana Chavez discusses Duke's loss to VCU in last year's tournament and how Duke has focused on game scenarios in practice sessions this year. Seven of Duke's ten scholarship players, the three freshmen and four sophomores, have never won an NCAA tournament game. This lack of recent success is unusual for the elite Duke program. Bryan Strickland has an article posted at the Durham Herald-Sun, which talks about the high confidence level of the team.

Duke's potential second round opponents are West Virginia and Arizona. For West Virginia coach Bob Huggins, the NCAA tournament has brought frustration and unfilled promise in recent years. Coach Huggins and leading scorer Joe Alexander will attempt to cure that frustration by knocking off the Wildcats. The Tucson Citizen says the Wildcats are rested and healthy for the NCAA tournament. This article talks about freshman sensation Jerryd Bayless and how teams are guarding him with big wings. This article in the Times West Virginia identifies Arizona's leading scorer as freshman Jerry Baylor. I expect by the time the game is over all Mountaineer fans will know the name Jerryd Bayless.

Projecting out to potential Sweet Sixteen opponents, Xavier or Purdue is the likely opponent, but Georgia and Baylor are possibilities. Xavier won the Atlantic 10 regular season title, but stumbled in the conference tournament so like Duke they enter the NCAA tournament with an extra days rest. Purdue is another guard oriented team that approaches games with a strategy similar to the Blue Devils. Georgia earned a bid by winning the SEC tournament after going 4-12 in the regular season. And Baylor is a team that has rebounded from serious trouble several years ago. Here is a Purdue - Baylor preview from the Waco Tribune.

Finally, here is the L.A. Times on the #1 seeded UCLA Bruins.  The Blue Devil faithful are hoping our West Regional experience begins and ends with a victory over the Bruins.

View Article  BDN's Spring Football Preview - The Cutcliffe Era Begins! (C)
When Coach Cutcliffe took to the podium inside the Spike Yoh Building, the first thing he said was, "Welcome to March Madness!"  He was referring to of course, Duke Basketball just about to begin the NCAA Tournament.  If you looked around the room, you would see just two TV crews and only a handful of journalists.  Yet if you looked just outside in front of Cameron there were three more local TV vans and a bevy of others awaiting the basketball PC. The odd thing is that they seemed unaware of the Spring Football Kickoff Press Conference or either they had ignored it altogether.

I couldn't help but look around wondering what David Cutcliffe was thinking.  I mean he is from the SEC where football is King.  At his former school Tennessee, they get over 100,000 fans to each football game by boats and cars.  Spring Football likely drew three times as many folks in Knoxville than was at last seasons opener for the Blue Devils versus Connecticut where 17,251 attended.

If Coach Cutcliffe was thinking about the lack of media, he hid it well.  Much like the day he was introduced as the new football coach he exuded something Duke fans and media weren't use to which was undeniable air of confidence.  More importantly, he stayed consistent with what he had said earlier, verbally displaying a plan and letting those there know that the process of revival had already started.

The new era of Duke Football gets underway on the field this Wednesday where 77 players will be drilled in a way that should separate those who want to play and those who will play.  "We are going to take a fair and honest look and evaluate everybody on our team," said Cutcliffe.  He went on to say that everybody was going into Spring healthy.  He also said that to have some order in that a first, second and third team would be created.  "You may be third team one day and second the next," said Cutcliffe.  He went on, "We are going to make it a very competitive situation," which I took to mean that spots open for those who have the desire to succeed.

It's no secret that not only last seasons special teams, but those in years past have lost several close contests for the Blue Devils.  That will be immediately addressed.  Cutcliffe and his staff will put early emphasis on special teams.  He stated, "No one is hands off.  We're going to put the best players on our team out there and our entire staff will assist Coach Middleton.  We are going to get a lot of quality work early in protection, coverage and returns as well as evaluate our specialists."

Ron Middleton is a burly fellow who is no nonsense when it comes to football.  He readily admits he likes to have fun, but when the whistle blows it's all business and no, well I can't say what he said but you can imagine.  There is a reason he has been named Duke Associate Head Coach and it's because his goal is to run a team one day.  A huge stepping stone to that goal would be to turn around one of the worst special teams in the country, especially at the skilled slots.

According to Cutcliffe, the goal is for Duke to compete from the first horn to the final horn in every phase of the game.  He admits that his team is not there yet, alluding to how disappointed he was with the overall shape of the team when he arrived in Durham.  "We will have really intense high tempo, challenging practices and the easy thing to do is give in.  That's kind of become a habit here, so early on they didn't know how to respond."  He went on to say the team was better but that fatigue was the contributing factor in last seasons inability to close games out in the fourth quarter.

How hard has Duke worked thus far?  "The team on a whole has lost 302.6 pounds.  They look different and they are moving differently," said Cutcliffe.  He was to put his team through a workout this morning to see how far they had come.  "If you don't plant well come Spring, you better learn to beg well come Fall," said the coach who then said he was intending to plant well.

How hard will Duke work?  Coach says they've had a really good six weeks leading up to Spring, but that they must have a great Spring -- not good, but a great five weeks.  "I have to watch myself for we don't have a lot of players.  During my first practice at Ole Miss we had to have 19 taken off for IVs, but I am not going to do that his time .. I am a little smarter and older," said Cutcliffe.

The staff will attempt to tweak a defense which returns 19 starters from a team that allowed 33 ppg last season.  "Getting people in the right places and to get our speed on the field will be critical for us to be successful," said Cutcliffe.  He wants to see how much this side of the ball can absorb, alluding to an "extensive package."  "We are going to settle in and find out who does what well. How much coverage we play will depend on what we are capable of being defensively."

The staff will also make sure that a lot of people will go to the ball in an effort to improve tackling.  I don't have to tell Duke fans how many attempted arm tackles resulted in big gains over the years.  They will also try to take the ball away.  "That's not an option not to and we are going to work hard at taking the ball away," said Cutcliffe.

On the offensive side of the ball, Duke will try to establish some sort of a running game.  The teams 64 ypg average last season allowed defenses to play off the line of scrimmage, making big plays hared to come by.  Offensive Coordinator, Kurt Roper has already been studying last seasons games on film and he will be one of the chief architects in finding a solution for a glaring weakness.

"We have to become a more physical football team to compete in this league," said Cutcliffe and that means along the line of scrimmage.  It's no secret a solid line which can work as a unit can allow plays to happen.  The Devils's boss knows that Eron Riley (20.8 avg, 9 T.D.'s) is a proven commodity, but he will seek others to step forward.  "I am anxious to see where our play makers are going to come from."  While nobody may immediately come to mind, a different offensive scheme will certainly allow a motivated young man to come into his own.

Duke returns Thadeus Lewis at quarterback and it's top two backups.  Lewis threw for 202.5 ypg to go with 21 touchdowns.  He will now develop under the man which coached the last two Super Bowl winning quarterbacks in Peyton and Eli Manning.

During the conference Cutcliffe commented on Lewis, "Thadeus has a presence that I like and he throws a nice ball on tape."  He went on to say that he didn't know what he was looking at or what his thought process was which I took to mean this is an area which must be improved.  "The decision making process is what separates a quarterback.  It's not only when you do it but where and I am anxious to see if we have a guy who has that," said Cutcliffe.

With two solid backups and the starter back, quarterback should be a strength.  You can soon add blue chipper Sean Renfree to the mix.  At 6-4 and 210, Renfree fits the mold which Cutcliffe likes.  In the end, he will play the best at that position come the home opener on August 30th against James Madison.

As for the offensive line, Duke will install very few blocking schemes in an effort to get them to execute proper techniques.  "We are going to get two guys on a board and find out who can whip who and they will do that until they learn how to be physical and learn how to win," said Cutcliffe.

Duke will not try to install their entire offense this Spring, focusing more on evaluating each player on noth sides of the ball.  They will lay down a base and build upon it.  What you can expect are intense physical tests.  "We will still throw a lot on them.  We are going to put in five days of offense insertion which will be more than enough plays than you would need to run a game.  The goal is to see how the team and individuals handle the load.

"When I have watched tape, I've seen us coming close, but then missing a tackle or falling to the ground." said Cut.  His staff will attempt to enforce new work habits by watching players on tape from start to finish.  Unlike seasons past, he will close the majority of practices which is an expected step towards big time college football.

Duke's new coach promises a different product than fans have been use to.  "We are going to have a (Spring) game and I think it is going to be interesting for people to come see," he said.  Duke will attempt to encourage the students and locals to come, even going as far to have a concert after the event.  There is no secret that Duke has gone to great measures to put Duke in the minds of many.  If you are anywhere around downtown Durham, you will see Coaches face plastered on all of the buses.  Heck, there is even a billboard in Charlotte which is known for it's UNC alumni.

Coach conceded that Duke may be the least talented team in the league, but he had an answer for that.  "We just have to become the best in the league at a lot of things.  We just have to make the plays at opportune times to win games.  He went on, "We've got enough good football players to win.  Let's stop making excuses."

Despite the lack of hullabaloo on opening day, Duke has garnered more interest in football than it has in quite some time.  There is no reason why this program cannot turn around and with some sprucing up of Wade it'll be one of the better backdrops for college football around.

So, perhaps the media overlooked the start of Spring Practice, but true fans didn't and in a complete turnabout from the past, Duke fans are talking about more than the basketball team.  They are anticipating football and as a long time follower of the many Spring and Fall practices, I can tell you that it's refreshing.  Still, as Coach Cutcliffe said, I will be watching March Madness, but I will be checking out football practice in between games.

I asked Coach the question about the players who had developed the most since conditioning was introduced and he was kind enough to go down the roster for me.  Here are the players mentioned -

Cliff Harris has made a significant difference in his quickness.  Raphael Chestnut even though he is hurt has made huge strides.  Marcus Jones, Zack Asack, Eron Riley with his speed and his quickness, Re'Quan, Brandon King, , Tony Jackson, Catron Gainey.  Vincent Rey moves like a different guy and his lost 15 or so pounds.  Tauiliilli has made some strides and fell back a little.  He needs to get a little weight off.  Akinbiyi ... I call him Greg.  I like what our two tackles have done with Fred Roland and Cameron Goldberg.  I'm real, real pleased with those guys.  Sheldon Bell and Jeremy Ringfield have made some progress.  Oghobasse has worked more and made progress, Ayanga.  A number of offensive lineman look different.  Repress, Harper ... Rucker is starting to move like an athlete again ... Jeffrey Cowart ... a lot of weight.  I am missing some ... now I have got to put shoulder pads and helmets on them and see if they can play football.  I've seen a lot of them that have made shorts All American team, that just doesn't quite get it later.

More Notes -

- Deep snapper- This position will be a priority.  I will be looking out for who mans the center position as well.

- Duke will have two days in shorts this week before they put on pads.

- The format will be 12 minute quarters with limited kicking situations.  The goal is to divide the teams up into a Blue and White team and let them compete.  Cutcliffe promised an entertaining game on three occasions during the press conference.

- Cutcliffe stated he had learned a lot from watching basketball practices.
